They're not too old, they're too buggy and poorly balanced. FireRed and LeafGreen are pretty amazing.

They're still quite good. And the combat system is much more robust, while still sticking to its roots.

Though I hate any official book from Nintendo. They never give numerical stats to anything. You only get "stars" or whatever for determining base stats of each Pokemon. I don't need to know that Mewtwo has five stars of Special Attack. I want to know that the base stat is 154.
