Since installing the latest GIMP release on my WIN7 PC, I cannot open any HP comic to translate it at home (and this includes ALL files, in any format, that are sent to me, e.g. the "Simon and Freddy" comics by Hukley). Trouble is: the software will not see any new comic I want to modify, despite the file being there in its cartel.
Can anyone either help me to fix the problem or suggest me a substitute for GIMP?
Thank you very much.

This is Gimp 2.8?
I can open files just fine.
Um... above the "open" and "cancel" buttons there should be a drop down menu. Does it say "All images"?

You're still having it. Have you tried to uninstall, delete the folder residue and then install again the program? Is this the version you're talking about? Paint.Net would be a good substitute for GIMP, at least to do this kind of work.
Re: Need technical help
well, know what? I seem to have solved the problem!
I saved the files in my external flash memory and installed an old GIMP release, and now it opens and edits without problems.
Bof!
