If you possess a savantism, of course.

Otherwise it's pretty hard to read 1300 pages in less than half a day.

I'm a pretty fast reader. There was a time when I had a giant list of books to read that I got at the library all at the same time. I started brining them to school so I could read in between class and at lunch and whatnot, and I'd bring a different book every day. One of my friends noticed and though I was just messing with him, but I had to assure him I indeed finished a book every day.

When I first read it, I checked Hominids, by Robert Sawyer out of the library by itself and didn't get the sequels because I figured I wouldn't finish it that quickly...I finished it on the ride home. I was upset with myself that I didn't have the other ones.

Normally I read about 100 pages an hour, depending on font and such. I can speed that up a lot if I don't like the book and want it to be done, at the cost of enjoyability and recall.

Peanut is way faster than that though. I wish I could read that fast. I'd be amazing. :P

Wait, you can finish a book in a day only between classes and at lunch?

Or were you also reading these books at home?

Depended on the book. I think I finished The Gunslinger just at school, but I hated that book so I went faster than normal. Mostly it was at school and at home for a few hours. I think I also finished High Fidelity at school only, because that book was short.

I have a hard time believing people prefer reading books over... doing anything else! Even being bored is more entertaining than reading a book for me >.<

I assume reading books is more interesting the faster you can read, since you are getting the same experience but spend less time to get it.

Dune is a worthwhile read, but it's also very dense; Frank Herbert was a linguist with a fondness for Arabic, and this is something that shows in the novel. You may have to reread the same passages several times in order to retain all the information Herbert is throwing at you (this is why it took me so long to finish); there's even a detailed glossary and timeline in the back of the book to explain some of the more frequently-used terms and give you a better idea of what the heck is going on.

If you want to become a Dune fan, that's good, but I would recommend that you consider getting introduced to the universe through another medium, like the 1984 film, the 2000 TV miniseries, or one of the old Westwood video games, before tackling the novel. The plot is very complex, and sometimes it's easier to watch it than to read it.

On a sort-of-related note, I'd been watching some Dune-related vids earlier in the week (purely on a whim), and have discovered that there exist a number of fan-created edits which seek to improve the quality of David Lynch's 1984 version. Lester would be proud; you wouldn't believe how people bicker over what should be included or excluded. Among other points of contention:

- Whether the narrator should be Princess Irulan, as in the theatrical release, or the nameless male narrator used for the extended television cut
- Whether the lengthy prologue and paintings specially created for the TV version should be used
- Which deleted scenes from the extended cut and "special features" sections of previous DVD releases should be included
- Which scenes should be musically re-scored
- Which scenes should have Lynch's lengthy internal monologues removed
- Whether or not Lynch's name should be included in the credits

Anime Bosom X, seriously! I'm honestly considering writing some Lesterfic just so I can talk about this stuff.

Imagination is all you need to bring the worlds of books to live, little whippersnapper! All your favorite football players read a book once! If you don't read books the Commies win!

I thought that I'm good at reading books. But after I've read this stip, I feel soooo tinny.

And about the question would Fox choose Peanut over Bino... I don't think he would do that. He has a good heart. Or if Bino won't go too far with his temper one day.

You know what? It strikes me that if Peanut read the entire collection in the local library, he should have a genius-level IQ. Not because he's a fast reader, but because if he actually managed to retain any of the information from the library, he would have textbooks worth of knowledge in his head. And even if his IQ didn't go up, then he would at least have learned a poop-ton of stuff on logic and the like. And let's not even get into the implications on the economical and business aspects, or the scientific breakthroughs he would know about.

...Again, I read too much into the characters ^^;

That's why I don't trust IQ tests, though--there's more to intelligence than memorizing and retaining information. There's also applying it and figuring out how to teach others that information on their level. I have a 155 IQ and I sure don't feel that smart that often.

Intelligence isn't just one spectrum. There are different ways to be smart, and not every smart person has all of them. Likewise, the IQ is only an (imperfect) measurement of only some forms of intelligence. Reading every book in the world would do very little to increase your IQ, since knowledge plays almost no role whatsoever in the test. Also, a person with a high IQ isn't necessarily smarter than someone with a lower one, but the odds are in their favor. Cue my obligatory TV Tropes link.

That is perfectly fine, it is the writer's fault if you end up seeing something else. Besides what makes a book (actually, anything) wonderful is YOUR imagination, not the WRITER'S imagination... Unless you are the writer in question. But again, you usually get paid for amusing the others, not amusing yourself. So...
