Comic Discussion: One-offs set #11

Post by Buckdida »

Annnnnd with the end of "Imaginate, Too!" We are now switching over to the arc based discussion, starting with this set of one offs!

Heheh, this reminds me about how we're always complaining about how cartoon network doesn't have any good shows anymore. I do miss the good episodes of Dexter's Lab...

Re: Comic Discussion: One-offs set #11

Post by ChewyChewy »

I need to post this here since the other thread was locked while I was typing it up:
Sleet wrote:Gasp, a pro-fan fiction comic? Usually one expects fan fiction to be the mostly-deserving whipping boy of the internet. I guess one comic has to mention it in a form other than the self-indulgent, canon-destroying flavor. Also, the idea that Grape would write more insane fan fiction than Tiger amuses me.

Today's post was brought to you by the letter "hyphen."
Huh! That didn't really occur to me until you pointed it out, but now that you mention it, yeah.... And it really goes back to what Rick said in his rant about art--if all art is communication, then what's fan fiction but reciprocal communication? They do say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery anyway, and someone else's fan fiction demonstrates how they perceive things differently from the original artist. What better way to meet halfway than to do two-plus versions of the same story?

Having said that, however, I was surprised to see a comic in which I agreed with Tiger (sort of). This comic honestly looks like an exaggerated, extreme version of my own views. I like a LOT of stories but find little in them to identify with, and on the rare occasions when I do (one in particular stands out, again as with Tiger), I don't like to do fan fiction. But that's because I tend (foolish as I know it is) to be a bit of a purist, and I fear not living up to the original artist's vision in doing fan fiction. I shouldn't be that way, and if I weren't, it'd probably free me up, but that's how I am.... (Which explains why I've done no fan fiction for Housepets! so far--my text adaptation of "It's a Wonderful Dog's Life" doesn't count because it's identical to the comic arc, just in text form.)

(By the way, IS there such a thing as "Runt the Spectacular," or is that like the "Pridelands" book series?)

Anyway, that line "Are you reading a NEWSPAPER?" went over my head until I realized these are PETS....

A deeper dive into the mind of Tiger.
Funny, I can't get into a story unless it has absolutely nothing to do with me.

Can you say "Dissension is wrong?" Well, I can.

Anyway, it's good to see Tiger again, and Marvin acting as a voice of reason. And a newspaper! It's like a triple-threat of awesome.

It's possible that Tiger is just being egocentric. "I don't like these comic strips, why would anyone make something that I dislike?"

Something just occurred to me--if someone picks up on a long-running series (due to death or retirement of the creator, or whatever), doesn't that mean that the successor's stories are fan fiction? (e. g., the Ruth Plumly Thompson Oz books?)

That's.. a really good point....

I'm writing a trilogy of novels, right now. And, at the same time, a friend of mine is writing a forth book (for reasons unknown to me...), and I don't think of it as something like that... Though, it may just be me not thinking of my books as being fan-worthy....

Well, fan fiction is defined as derivative fiction that is related to its subject's canon but simultaneously existing outside of said canon and, most importantly, isn't professionally published. Professionally published fiction written without the consent of theauthor or the right owners of the original material is referred as an informal sequel, whereas with consent it's a formal sequel.

Considering that most get around this by making a parody or basing it on public domain material, not that often as one thinks.

Nah, most fanfiction is copyright infringement, because most fanfiction is not written as parody, just badly written, and then they use fair use after the fact to cover their behinds.

The point of fair use is for people to express opinion without fear of being censored by the author. For example:

1. Reviews (this is the big one for fair use)
2. Classroom use (for teaching)
3. Parody
4. Research

In addition, such stuff under fair use really shouldn't benefit the person who created it under fair use. The intent of the person matters too. They can say it's parody, but unless it is evident that it clearly is, it's really not.

When a person writes a fanfiction, they mainly do it for (as so the comic says) their own indulgences. People often write fanfiction based on what they want to happen, and forget the canon. That's not really making fun of something to provide your own commentary or humor. Parody, honestly, is more supposed to protect political cartoonists (and the occasional good flash movie).

So. Most fanfiction, or fanart for that matter, would be considered copyright infringement, and are not protected by fair use. However, in reality, not only would it take a team of people to keep all of it down, it would be bad publicity for the author, and many authors can actually find such things flattering...depending on the person's intent, of course.

So fanfiction gets on by, unless the author finds it and really hates it for reasons of his/her own. Good thing, too, because there actually are good fanfics that really stand out. Like Sinder and Dean's stuff. And Twiggy's stuff. And for others, it can be good practice and a venue for feedback and criticism for improving.
