i did this once when i was a little preteen XB i totally missed the point/metaphor of animal farm first time i read it (hey, it was middleschool. communism wasn't something we were taught about!) and so wrote a 'part 2' for myself.

fortunately this was before the internet was really a thing, so nobody saw it but me.

Gotta say that Zach looks really, really cute. Especially in the last panel. That scared grimace is just hilarious! I do hope we get to learn even more about Tiger, Marvin and Zach. However, if the new cast page is any indication, I think we'll be seeing a lot more of these guys. (and if you guys haven't seen it yet, Rick's updated the cast page quite a bit.)

I'm going to take a wild guess and say this comic will go into the bonus section eventually. The randomness of it is funny though. I think it's mainly a reference to his recent blog post, myself.

Well, it kinda seemed out of character for the comic, even for a one-off. Funny nonetheless, but it's also nothing like any of the other one-offs (and it's also not tagged as such). If it's purposely tagged under "Fall of the Pridelands" for a reason, then that is also hilarious.

(then again, most of the one-offs are crazy random...)

EDIT: Okay, upon truthful reflection, I thought it was filler. BUT then I remembered that editorial comics are only in B&W.

Hmm, I believe I'm slowly getting it. but I still haven't grasped it completely. All I can beep out of it is we're throwing around money, until we sink and that the only thing keeping us up are the representatives, the backbones are the two people I don't feel like quoting, and we're only breathing through mortages/etc.

You mispelled Argument in your blog post... Heh.

Yes it says it's about the economy but it doesn't make any sense about how the bulk of that relates to the economy or how the objects that are supposed to represent the bailout or a mortgage relate to anything else in the comic. Are they only self contained meaning the bailout is just a flotation device or is everything interconnected? How is Grape Nancy Paloci or Peanut Reid McConnell? It doesn't make that much sense at all and seems more like an inside joke.

It's not about the economy... or any of the things in the picture. It's a joke, making fun of how dumb editorial cartoons are.

Oh... sorry about that. It's not a word I consider a swear, seeing as it's kinda become part of the vernacular. I'm going to edit it again to say "dumb" so it doesn't look like a far worse word than it actually was, as is the case frequently when bleeping something out.

i have to say that i side with PA and now housepets too...that realm of cartooning comes off as extremely preechy and pretentious. i'm not at all sad to see them on their way out. lately they've been causing more harm than anything. news stories about that stupid catoon where a muslim had a bomb for a hat were just everywhere a few months ago.

i can understand where they used to have their relevence. where back in the bygone era of yore, people lacked the generalised language and understanding to grasp a fairly abstract concept like 'the housing market is in trouble'. they couldn't put it in a context of 'what does that mean for ME?' so the comics were in essence graphic organisers to break these concepts down in a way the general populace could clearly grasp them.

but we don't need that anymore. we've expanded not only our vocabulary and our understanding, but our means towards acquiring further understanding. it's a relic, and instead of being informative in an off the cuff and witty way, they now smack of personal grudges and "if you don't get this, it's not FOR you."

unfortunately i think a great number of housepets' readers are fairly young, and in all likelyhood don't follow the news all that closely. so this particular one-off may confuse them, because it's almost too good a parody. PA made it very clear to their readers (some of whom are...unique at times) by segueing from the overblown political cartoon straight into gabe drawing it and the thought process behind the "meaning." but without that clear step here, i think some people might actually think it's serious. because it makes about as much sense as any political cartoon these days...

it's not on economics or politics, that's the joke.

basicly economic/political cartoonists are all whining about how their jobs are in danger because newspapers don't want them anymore. most actual cartoonists are snorting at these hacks and saying "about freakin time."

housepets is mocking the political cartoon, not actually attempting to make one....

which is exactly what i was saying before about some readers not getting it. :\

This also proves that editorial comics are easy to make, because half the work and humor comes from audience interpretation. When I posted, I didn't say, "the point is that there's nothing to get" because it was funny seeing people who didn't read Rick's blogpost try to actually find meaning to the "political comic," despite the fact that that everything was labeled and didn't really mean much, if anything.

yeah, that's the entire point of why such comics are...hack work. effortless and pretentious. throw any handful of arbitrary images together and let the audience sort it out. like a visual mad-libs.

though honestly I don't understand what this whole debate is going on about, that part I don't care too much for.
