Too much silliness for food! =P
so why is falstaff’s hands on fire?
Cartoon physics renders extra spicy food as temperature-hot, at least to the extent demonstrated here.
(RL spices that are strong enough can cause skin irritation, too, especially if you touch it to the wrong places; Without going into details, let’s just say after handling really spicy food you should wash your hands before using the restroom, as well as after.)
Because that’s the pot of boiling water they use to cook the crawfish.
Am I the only one who thinks that “Spyci Paws” would be a great name for a kind of dance ???
Little bit of aloe should clear that right up.

I prefer using things like my eyes and nose before shoving appendages into things, but we all have personal preferences!

Poor Falstaff with his skalded paws, he reminds me of a time when I picked up a hot iron. Long story short, NOT FUN!
Tell me about it. As an artesan I can tell you that, you have no idea how you’ll hurt yourself when it comes to hot iron.
I recall a discussion thread once about soldering with insufficient clothing. It was cringeworthy.

I know how that feels. Once grabbed a metal pot handle that was over another pot of boiling water for who knew how long. Also made the mistake of slicing Habanero peppers without gloves one time. Live and learn.

Actually, the Scoville Scale is named for its creator, Wilbur Lincoln Scoville of Parke-Davis Pharmaceuticals. It’s been around for about ninety years, and is used to rate the ‘hotness’ of organic peppers and other chemicals.
Perfesser, Sydney Scoville is a reference to another webcomic, Grrl Power. She considers three million scoville ‘acceptable’.

It’s boiling water to cook the crawfish.
Look carefully. That’s exactly what Truck thought too. Apparently, they need to let the crayfish sit in spices after making them boiling hot, so they can soak the spice up
I’m pretty sure Truck was right and Falstaff was wrong (being authoritatively wrong is Falstaff’s job), unless there’s something fundamentally different with the way the HP world does a crawfish boil. The crawfish in the sink aren’t cooked, they’re still live. They’re killed by being dunked in that pot.
Which opens up comic possibilities when the coons discover the crawfish are alive. Possibly:
(a) a reprise of “Please don’t eat me” in http://www.abominable.cc/2009/02/04/mascotting/
(b) crawfish claws are tougher than raccoon paws

Thats what I thought at first. But then I realized I didn’t want a broom to the face
I learned the same lesson in a way more painful way
I learned too, only it involved those smoke screen Fourth of July fireworks and me grabbing it wrong(my finger got roasted(it’s fine now, but it hurt like that unpleasant place in the ground)).
Raccoons should just give into being domesticated. Free food is worth it.

I don’t know how craw fish are meant to be cooked, but this is still funny. XD
You boil ‘em. When the crawfish is red and not moving anymore you put in the spices and keep the water warm for a few hours.

I too was confused at first. But I have concluded that the problem is in fact that the water is laced with very hot peppers, not boiling. Aside from the alt text, there is no steam coming off the pot (even Truck isn’t stupid enough to not be able to tell that something’s too hot to touch safely), and Falstaff obviously leaves his hands in the water for longer than the fraction of a second it would take to realize that it’s boiling hot. My 2 cents’ worth.
That is a good conclusion but you’re forgetting that water doesn’t need to boil or steam to be really hot. Believe you me I’ve done something similar with some bath water from the sauna. It wasn’t boiling or steaming so I thougt that the water was cold or at least skin warm so I put my hand in the bucket and after 2 second I pull my hand out shaking it and putting it in the river to cool off. Besides who says that there’s any peppers in the pot.
I’m guessing because he says ’spicy’ instead of ‘hot’…
But that doesn’t mean that the peppers are hot enough to burn Falstaffs paws. I mean if it was a container filled with nothing but red hot chili peppers then yeah, I could agree it burns. But since they’re spicing the crawfish, I get the joke cause Falstaff realises that there are spices in the hot pot and the pain should feel like salt on an open wound.
There’s no pepper hot enough to make your hands burn like that. Eyes and mucous membranes, yes, but even straight Bhut Jolokia is stopped by the epidermis.
Unless his hands were somewhat raw from vigorously washing the crayfish, in which case most spices would be able to cause serious irritation.
Rule of Funny applies, you know.
Just to clear the air, I believe Falstaff was talking about the ingredients in the pot. ya know pepper, garlic and he was about to say spices before he dipped his hands into the pot of hot/boiling water. One thing leads to another and he shouts “Spicy Paws!” instead of spices or AHHHH my Paws!!
Spices don’t excatly burn. They just give food a strong flavour and smell.
Now if his hands were scalded by hot water, then they’d be sensitive to capsaicin.

I can imagine Truck’s voice being similar to RvB’s Caboose. I’m guessing that if Truck puts his paws in the spice mix, he’ll be running around screaming about how his paws are burning and how his fur does nothing.

Prediction: Grape will catch the coons, but at that point Falstaff will pass out from fear, and pain in his paws. Truck won’t fully realize what’s going on at first, and since she’s been in a good mood thus far, Grape will calm down Truck, and when Falstaff wakes up he will be greeted with smiling faces and a free meal for the night… but what then?
