Cartoon physics renders extra spicy food as temperature-hot, at least to the extent demonstrated here.
(RL spices that are strong enough can cause skin irritation, too, especially if you touch it to the wrong places; Without going into details, let’s just say after handling really spicy food you should wash your hands before using the restroom, as well as after.)
I know how that feels. Once grabbed a metal pot handle that was over another pot of boiling water for who knew how long. Also made the mistake of slicing Habanero peppers without gloves one time. Live and learn.
Actually, the Scoville Scale is named for its creator, Wilbur Lincoln Scoville of Parke-Davis Pharmaceuticals. It’s been around for about ninety years, and is used to rate the ‘hotness’ of organic peppers and other chemicals.
Hmm I wonder if the food is hot or if there is some kind of spice making his hands red? I’m thinking spices, but geeze what causes something like that? O.o
Look carefully. That’s exactly what Truck thought too. Apparently, they need to let the crayfish sit in spices after making them boiling hot, so they can soak the spice up
I’m pretty sure Truck was right and Falstaff was wrong (being authoritatively wrong is Falstaff’s job), unless there’s something fundamentally different with the way the HP world does a crawfish boil. The crawfish in the sink aren’t cooked, they’re still live. They’re killed by being dunked in that pot.
If Falstaffs screams of pain won’t give them away than I don’t know what will. o-_o- -o_-o
>:D heh heh hee. HEY EVERYONE! THE RACCOONS ARE STEALING THE CRAWFISH!!!
I learned too, only it involved those smoke screen Fourth of July fireworks and me grabbing it wrong(my finger got roasted(it’s fine now, but it hurt like that unpleasant place in the ground)).
I too was confused at first. But I have concluded that the problem is in fact that the water is laced with very hot peppers, not boiling. Aside from the alt text, there is no steam coming off the pot (even Truck isn’t stupid enough to not be able to tell that something’s too hot to touch safely), and Falstaff obviously leaves his hands in the water for longer than the fraction of a second it would take to realize that it’s boiling hot. My 2 cents’ worth.
That is a good conclusion but you’re forgetting that water doesn’t need to boil or steam to be really hot. Believe you me I’ve done something similar with some bath water from the sauna. It wasn’t boiling or steaming so I thougt that the water was cold or at least skin warm so I put my hand in the bucket and after 2 second I pull my hand out shaking it and putting it in the river to cool off. Besides who says that there’s any peppers in the pot.
But that doesn’t mean that the peppers are hot enough to burn Falstaffs paws. I mean if it was a container filled with nothing but red hot chili peppers then yeah, I could agree it burns. But since they’re spicing the crawfish, I get the joke cause Falstaff realises that there are spices in the hot pot and the pain should feel like salt on an open wound.
There’s no pepper hot enough to make your hands burn like that. Eyes and mucous membranes, yes, but even straight Bhut Jolokia is stopped by the epidermis.
Just to clear the air, I believe Falstaff was talking about the ingredients in the pot. ya know pepper, garlic and he was about to say spices before he dipped his hands into the pot of hot/boiling water. One thing leads to another and he shouts “Spicy Paws!” instead of spices or AHHHH my Paws!!
So I guess saying that the coons were caught red handed would be an understatement? Plus who at that party is not going to here Falstaff shouting outside!
I can imagine Truck’s voice being similar to RvB’s Caboose. I’m guessing that if Truck puts his paws in the spice mix, he’ll be running around screaming about how his paws are burning and how his fur does nothing.
RvB?!!!!!! YOU’VE SEEN IT TOO!!!! THAT SHOW WAS AWESOME! Made laugh, made me cry, heck it even gave me lot’s of ideas for characters for my own comics/mangas.
Prediction: Grape will catch the coons, but at that point Falstaff will pass out from fear, and pain in his paws. Truck won’t fully realize what’s going on at first, and since she’s been in a good mood thus far, Grape will calm down Truck, and when Falstaff wakes up he will be greeted with smiling faces and a free meal for the night… but what then?
Too much silliness for food! =P
so why is falstaff’s hands on fire?

Because that’s the pot of boiling water they use to cook the crawfish.
Am I the only one who thinks that “Spyci Paws” would be a great name for a kind of dance ???
Little bit of aloe should clear that right up.
Truck you just don’t learn very well do you?
“friend seems to be in pain and has red paws now, looks like fun I want to try”
this is how truck thinks
this would be a horrible time for them to be caught “Red-Handed”
+1
*rimshot*
they probably will considering that scream
One Internets for you, sir
Hooray!
Well, he got all the way from Oregon to Babylon. That’s something, right?
Depends, where’s Babylon Gardens, exactly? Is it near Springfield?
Not sure, but I think I heard it was in North Carolina
My bet is that Babylon Gardens is somewhere in or around Missouri.
I thought Ohio maybe.
I’ve always put it in either Ohio,Michigan or Indiana myself
when in doubt just stick your hand right in, or maybe don’t that might be safer XD
I prefer using things like my eyes and nose before shoving appendages into things, but we all have personal preferences!
I stick my feet first, then I drag my feet back with my hands and drag my hands back with my face.
Do… do you put your left foot in? Is there any shaking all about involved?
Falstaff has yet to master the secret of Raccoon Punch.
He first needs to see the Grand Master to learn it. As for Truck… Meh. He’s already mastered it.
RACOON PUNCH!
Must be some strong stuff. His hands are glowing radioactive red.
“paws”? Raccoons don’t have paws.
Technically neither do any of the other anthropomorphic animals in HP!
There are anthropomorphic animal characters in Harry Potter?!
Yeah, Hermione is one in the second book (only for a little while but still.)
There is no ! in HP.
What part of that looks enjoyable truck!?
Yelling expletives!
Heh yet Truck wants to try it anyway! XD
Maybe he likes them spicy paws with his craw-fish. xD
Poor Falstaff with his skalded paws, he reminds me of a time when I picked up a hot iron. Long story short, NOT FUN!
Tell me about it. As an artesan I can tell you that, you have no idea how you’ll hurt yourself when it comes to hot iron.
I recall a discussion thread once about soldering with insufficient clothing. It was cringeworthy.
Please, you obviously never cooked bacon shirtless…
Nah, it went way past soldering *shirt*less.
I know how that feels. Once grabbed a metal pot handle that was over another pot of boiling water for who knew how long. Also made the mistake of slicing Habanero peppers without gloves one time. Live and learn.
try ingesting the hobanero right afterwards
No. Don’t even like jalapenos.
AT – Tears will sooth the pain! Quick, rub your eyes!
It just sounds so terribly painful that I can’t even imagine what it might actually feel like…
Poor little raccoons!
Raccoon paws are on the menu now
What did they put in there, The Unmaker? You’d think they invited Sydney Scoville over to play chef!
If she wasn’t there before she will be soon. (Alt text surprisingly relevant here: “tears will sooth the pain: quick, rub your eyes”)
Actually, the Scoville Scale is named for its creator, Wilbur Lincoln Scoville of Parke-Davis Pharmaceuticals. It’s been around for about ninety years, and is used to rate the ‘hotness’ of organic peppers and other chemicals.
Perfesser, Sydney Scoville is a reference to another webcomic, Grrl Power. She considers three million scoville ‘acceptable’.
I’ve tried million-scoville range peppers. No. Just, no.
yea as they point out in grrl power she lives up to the family name
The third panel could’ve look better if it had a wild take.
Spicy craw! I want in!
This takes the term “hot hands” to a whole new level
What about “hot pads” on hot paws?
At this point, methinks this will end with them deciding the food wasn’t worth all the pains…
Either that or they get invited to the party anyway after no one else will come.
They’ve already been through too much to quit.
Someone could give him water to cool down his paws and invite them out of sympathy =3
if you know whats in it then why not use a big spoon?!?! (5 secs later) MA’ SPOON IS TOO BIG!
because you can’t wash it with a spoon!
Ha, for all this trouble, they should just give ‘em the food…
Hmm I wonder if the food is hot or if there is some kind of spice making his hands red? I’m thinking spices, but geeze what causes something like that? O.o
It’s boiling water to cook the crawfish.
Look carefully. That’s exactly what Truck thought too. Apparently, they need to let the crayfish sit in spices after making them boiling hot, so they can soak the spice up

The crawfish in the sink aren’t cooked, they’re still live. They’re killed by being dunked in that pot.
Which opens up comic possibilities when the coons discover the crawfish are alive. Possibly:
(a) a reprise of “Please don’t eat me” in http://www.abominable.cc/2009/02/04/mascotting/
(b) crawfish claws are tougher than raccoon paws
I feel REALLY bad for Falstaff. Poor guy…
feel bad for both if truck wants to try it!!!
Me next
the spices are so hot, they are melting the pot’s outer layer!
Stop, drop and roll!! We need more water XD
If Falstaffs screams of pain won’t give them away than I don’t know what will. o-_o- -o_-o
>:D heh heh hee. HEY EVERYONE! THE RACCOONS ARE STEALING THE CRAWFISH!!!
Okay, now we have the recipe for “Buffalo Coons.” Take two raccoons and add ground Trinidad Moruga Scorpion peppers…
Uh sounds delicious.
hehe “tears will soothe the pain”. Great alt text
Caught RED-HANDED!
Heh? Heh?!
*pelted with tomatoes*
if you’re coverred in tomatos, let’s dunk you in the pot to!
*gets a huge spatula*
* BROOM to Your FACE* !
Thats what I thought at first. But then I realized I didn’t want a broom to the face
I learned the same lesson in a way more painful way
I learned too, only it involved those smoke screen Fourth of July fireworks and me grabbing it wrong(my finger got roasted(it’s fine now, but it hurt like that unpleasant place in the ground)).
Raccoons should just give into being domesticated. Free food is worth it.
and people wonder why i dont eat spicy foods >.>
I kinda dislike spicy foods as well~
Go wash again. It’ll pass
I don’t know how craw fish are meant to be cooked, but this is still funny. XD
You boil ‘em. When the crawfish is red and not moving anymore you put in the spices and keep the water warm for a few hours.
I cast burning hands into the sky to turn them into healing hands!
I too was confused at first. But I have concluded that the problem is in fact that the water is laced with very hot peppers, not boiling. I’m guessing because he says ’spicy’ instead of ‘hot’…
But that doesn’t mean that the peppers are hot enough to burn Falstaffs paws. I mean if it was a container filled with nothing but red hot chili peppers then yeah, I could agree it burns. Unless his hands were somewhat raw from vigorously washing the crayfish, in which case most spices would be able to cause serious irritation.
Rule of Funny applies, you know.
Spices don’t excatly burn. They just give food a strong flavour and smell.
Now if his hands were scalded by hot water, then they’d be sensitive to capsaicin.
The name and alt text of this strip both make me grin!
PAAAAIIIIIN
So I guess saying that the coons were caught red handed would be an understatement? Plus who at that party is not going to here Falstaff shouting outside!
the dogs at the dinner are SO going to suffer when they sniff those things!
Oh gosh I know, right? xD
How come these raccoons didn’t realize that the water is boiling hot.
Silly racoons! xD
Silly me! “gets kicked off the stage”
I can imagine Truck’s voice being similar to RvB’s Caboose. I’m guessing that if Truck puts his paws in the spice mix, he’ll be running around screaming about how his paws are burning and how his fur does nothing.

I totally adore the D&D spell reference in the title…
Jadugara ^_^
I know, I just read the title a while after the comic was out and I was like “lol dnd reference!”
Wash them off, quick!
That’ll leave a mark in the mornin’. hehe
