I wouldn’t be surprised if it did have something to do with pete, after all, at the end of pete’s trial, he had a laugh that could only lead to one thing. What that is exactly, I don’t know. http://www.housepetscomic.com/2012/06/01/end-of-year-four/
this is interesting.
King is under Milton’s jurisdiction, so now that Keene is a minion or Pete, the ferret should do his bidding and cause havoc to king’s life.
BUT!
There is the ‘free will’ clause: Pete cannot FORCE keene’s will and Keene wouldn’t cause harm to King since that in turn would ruin the ’social program’ he’s running.
Pete must work with subtlety on that…
Ooh dear. That could make their relationship very… Interesting. I wonder what Pete will think when Keene inevitable says “Pete, I appreciate everything you’ve done, but do you think you could hurry this world equality thing up a bit? I’m not getting any younger, you know!”
I have been trying to pick out why he looks so off in the new style. Thanks for pointing it out. He is still cute, but the dark black really sticks out with his color scheme.
P.S.what happened with Rufus and the Cats and the horses (they had the most awesome names) and the indiferent cows and the chikens and the rest of the animals?
Poor them, makes me kinda sad face
Well the whole comic can be kinda creepy, if you think about it. Like that whole dog show or the arch about being naked. This whole comic is admitantly wierd and that’s what makes it good.
I think it’s just the way her handkerchief is resting on her chest that’s making it look that way.
And, besides, jokes about poppies puppies aside, I suspect that kind of thing would exceed the limits that Rick has put on the comic, as far as acceptable content goes.
(Of course, I’m just some random schmuck on the internet. I could be wrong. )
Highly doubtful. Bailey probably hasn’t been able to do chores for a while, allowing her to get a little bit of a cute soft belly.
Of course, given new forum rules expressly allow discussion of pregnancy (as opposed to being an assumption of the PG-13 rating of the forum domain), she may have a baby bump in the future. :3
Oh, and allow me a note of national pride for once: As of yesterday, the 1942 law, which didn’t allow for pets in condos where the condos would say so have been canceled.
In italy bailey could have gone living with her family.
But of course I’m MEGA happy that bailey eventually got to live in the Gardens. YAY!
There are lots of us working to change that in the States, as well–we are educating landlords on the desirability of pet owners as tenants, since pet owners tend to stay longer in places than other tenants and (usually) take better care of the premises. That way, fewer animals end up in shelters and Animal Control facilities.
That said, it’s still an uphill fight, since a few bad apples can ruin it for everyone else. Irresponsible owners who don’t TRAIN their pets and who don’t spay or neuter them, or who don’t care for them properly cause untold grief for so many others. I once rented a place where someone had had a dog that they didn’t housebreak and that had had a miserable case of fleas. It took our landlord weeks to get the carpets cleaned enough that the odors were gone, and my poor 2 year old Golden Retriever, who had never had a flea on him, was driven almost mad from the bites. The whole yard was infested, which led to the house being infested (This was before Advantage and Advantix). You couldn’t walk from the driveway to the front door without being covered in the little devils.
To give the landlord his due, he was unaware of the flea problem, since there had been a cold snap between the previous tenant moving out and us moving in, and fleas don’t like the cold. Add heat, though, and instant problems. For the sake of the dog and for my two children’s sake, we moved at the end of our six month lease to a much better location. The dog never had another flea in the rest of his 17 years.
Still, personally, I would never move somewhere that did not allow me to have both my human kids and my fur kids. They aren’t perfect, but they’re all housebroken and were taught manners.
Hey Rick or whomever manages the page. For some reason if you go back to the previous strip “Seasons Greetings” it wont let you advance to this strip. The only way I was able to get to this strip was to go to the very 1st strip then hit the last. Not sure if its just my end but if I view the previous strip it wont let me advance to this one no matter hitting ‘next’ or ‘last’ from “Seasons Greetings”
Only thing I have to say about the new style (and I probably shoulda said this in the previous comic) is Fox looks a bit off now. But I’m sure it’ll grow on me. King still looks like King, and he’s still as cute as ever.
I said that I shoulda mentioned that in the previous comic because that’s when we last saw Fox. (The last time before that was June 20th, the “Housepets Playing Poker” one-off. I freakin’ Loooove that one. Contemplating getting the T-shirt (if it’s still available)).
Hmm, I know I said I didn’t like the heavy line art style of the two strips before Rick’s illness, but I think I prefer it to these two. I don’t know, the characters just look off to me, especially King. But that may just be me adjusting to the new style. I’m sure I’ll grow to like it in time, but I’m really going to miss the old style (which I felt was the best)
But, glad to see you are back, Rick. I look forward to the continuation of the comic.
I still don’t think that I (at least) would see much difference between a Housepets style dog or cat and an adopted child.
Besides… the apartment doesn’t allow dogs? Where else are they going to get a supervisor who can sniff out problems properly? It’s probably some sort of cat-spiracy there.
What’s with the sudden art style change since “We’ll leave a light on”?
Does it have to do with Rick being in the hospital? If so that just adds another reason I hope Rick feels better. The old style had so much flow and grace to it.
I’ll give you a good reason: a streamlined design means the comic being delayed is now less likely! (Flow and Grace just doesn’t put deadlines on the table)
thou if this is Pete’s doing.. it’s a nicer plan maybe.. He only needs a connection to king..
maybe getting the ferrets and king’s girlfriend on his… side,,, hey wait.. If Pete won… wouldn’t that make it so Bailey could live with her family no matter where they had a home?
I DO wonder, though, if the dogs in the housepets! universe have human or near human intelligence, why bdon’t they form their own societies? And are there big dissimilarities between our world’s history and the housepets! world history! Were there human versus animal wars?
T_T Awwwwww, Bailey, I’m so sorry about what happened(especially so close to Christmas time). If you were real(or, if I could jump into the comic), I’d give you a hug and say everything will be okay.
(P.S. In response to Peanut’s character sheet: YEAH, PEANUT IS CANADIAN!! HI FIVE, EH!!(canadian bro fist) )
Would someone NOT think of the children?! Even if they are your own, human children are a lot easier to find than huskies, so by logic, huskies are worth moar!!!
We last saw the Milton Nephews in a dangling plot thread at the beginning of the Temple arc.
I’m wondering if they’re going to start showing up in single strips like that, in various places in the world, kind of like Thompson and Tompson tracking their forensic dowsing pendant all over the world in “Prisoners of the Sun”?
so he’s learning his lesson. And that was something Pete was aiming for.
But something must be told in favor of Joel: he was really fond of animals even to a personal level… He was also traumatized into detesting them after he was kidnapped and possibly beaten when he ran away with them.
So in a way, BEING an animal is helping to realize that, just like humans, not all dogs/cats/etc are the same, so he’s able to work through his issues!
I think maybe, MAYBE, Pete might stop messing with him if this can be used to make him an even more POWERFUL type of Avatar, one whose powers come from overcoming rather than being beaten down.
Awesome! I have waited the whole time for this moment when King and Bailey returns!
I just have to say, I really dislike how King looks now. Bailey is totally fine, but this new style makes it looking like more traditional cartoon. King contains somehow less details than before or am I wrong? The round white muzzle with black line… to me it makes it rather “cheap” looking.
But I am still very happy to see Bailey and King again! ^w^
“Implicit Benevolence” rule.
The GM would NEVER allow any gamer to cause harm to the mortals. Avatars, apparently, can be tricked into doing the gamers’ bidding. Pete never denied he’s messing with King in order to gain energies from the negativity of his (former, tho) avatar. But harming innocents is a no-no (and especially in light of the recent sentence, courtesy of Bahamuth)
So another example of animal lives being less valued than human ones. Pete promised equality, and is apparently still working on making King his avatar. Yet I don’t see King willingly working with Pete, and Pete is rather limited on what he can actually do at the moment. This will be worth watching.
For future reference, that’s not how to deal with potentially rule-breaking posts. To avoid public confrontations and flaming, it’s best to alert the moderation team using the e-mail address provided in the same discussion guidelines you mentioned. :3
It may just be me, but I don’t feel the current color set suits it at all…the contrast is too high and the colors too dark for such a light-hearted scene.
Hopefully, that’s the reason behind most of these posts–what do each of us like or not like about the style. It gives us a way to influence Housepets 3.0 when that style debuts around Christmas time.
I personally like the lighter colors of the old style, but I’m trying to judge this style on its own merits .
My native tongue is german and learned crumpling as the word “verkrüppeln”. That word also means crippled. I really like how Bailey is drawn, but King is not as cute as before, i think.
I agree with Proxi-King seems to have been oversimplified in many regards-he has lost his individual personality and instead has adopted a generalized comic feel. It lacks heart. The ears are also simplified on both King and Bailey. King looks very juvenile, as in a very young dog. It seems he has lost his maturity some. Also, the whites of the eyes seem to over-dominate the eyes themselves. There is not enough color in the eyes/irises, in my opinion. I wish Rick did not take this turn in changing the comic art style. I like the old style much better.
it’s a shame that most of the comments are about how cute snuggles are, or that how sad is the bailey’s situation on a holiday’s season. i think the new style won’t work for king and for fox as i’ve seen the new character sheet. i think rick should take some consideration about not changing so much the character’s strong features in this new style attempt.
I dunno, I really don’t see all of these problems people seem to keep having with the new style, it looks alright to me. You have to remember that he draws a three time a week webcomic. He is free to change the style however he likes, it is after all, his creation and if it makes it easier on him, seeing that no one here is paying for it, then why not change it?
of course, is his work and he can do whatever he seems proper with it as he also shares it for free. i just think (and i think Redallover will agree) that rick might let go some distinctive qualities of some characters in this change of style. it’s fair to give an opinion even if it’s not considered.
I think people are being over critical over the art style change. The characters are still cute and the story still awesome, so lets let Rick explore. It is his Universe after all.
THIS COMMENT IS STRICTLY ABOUT THE ART AND STYLE CHANGES, and what I thought about them.
This MIGHT just be a trick of my imagination, but it seems to me that the characters are a little less defined and less detailed. The stark contrast between King’s fur colors is a little much, in my opinion–I always thought it was more of a mixing of two colors where they meet.
The backgrounds are very strong and sharp, so it takes some getting used to, but it doesn’t look bad, just different. (The lamp in the last panel almost seems more defined than King and Bailey!)
The eyes look a little more “cartoon-y” than they used to, I think they might be shinier? Or maybe the irises are smaller? A little of both?
On the other hand, I REALLY like the new panel layouts from this and the previous strip. I like the center panels here, since it really makes the conversation flow while giving enough room for the text bubbles.
I liked how the title was in the last strip: obvious, but it fit.
I thought the narration at the beginning was a cool way to introduce a new ark, but I’m glad it hasn’t continued on to this strip, since everything we need to know is in the conversation–which feels completely natural.
Overall, I like it–but it’s easier for me to point out the things that I don’t feel are absolutely positively as perfect as they could be . In the end, however you decide to go is your decision, but I remembered that you asked for contributions last time you brought out new strips, and I see that you’ve taken the reader’s opinions to heart.
It means that if an evil gryphon turns a dog into a football and starts kicking the dog/football around, the dog/football bounces back and hits the griphon in the face!
Awesome get-together for the holidays! ^^
for the holidays, for the post-holidays, for the summer…
zerknittern means crumple in german…rick was right not funny
Well, -I- think “zerknittern” is a funny word. At least it’s one of the funnier words in German. God, my language sucks…
They sold the farm ? I hope it has nothing to do with a gryphon …
Knowing Pete it probably does have something to do with him.
I wouldn’t be surprised if it did have something to do with pete, after all, at the end of pete’s trial, he had a laugh that could only lead to one thing. What that is exactly, I don’t know.
http://www.housepetscomic.com/2012/06/01/end-of-year-four/
Depends on how much of a reset HP!3.0 is.
I’d put good money that’s probably what happened. Evil farm-buying gryphon. I bet he doesn’t even like farming! Or cows!
I’m sure Pete likes cows–preferably with a lightly spiced barbecue sauce…yummy
Good point. Now, I want to get a really big bottle of A1 sauce.
Hmm does make sense! Get them closer than ever and for Pete to carry out his evil diabolical plan?
this is interesting.
Pete must work with subtlety on that…
Keene is not exactly a minion type, and he was negotiating from a position of power, I’m sure he sees Pete as a kind of spiritual general contractor.
Ooh dear. That could make their relationship very… Interesting. I wonder what Pete will think when Keene inevitable says “Pete, I appreciate everything you’ve done, but do you think you could hurry this world equality thing up a bit? I’m not getting any younger, you know!”
“OK, let’s start out making ferrets and humans equal…”
long narrow tubes and paper weights stock market become world wide haven assets
Given the way people track what the ferrets buy on the market, they probably are already.
But Pete’s plan involves constantly RUINING King’s life!
Now I’m worried!
This is just what I love about housepets, you just can’t wait for the next update.
YAY! This is going to bring in a lot of neat new story lines!
–And not to mention, more snuggling lol x3
Last panel deserves a snap shot and placed in a frame! D’awwwwwwww
“Comic title written by guest pun writer Rufus”
I see what you did there.
Such is the curse of having such large adorable ears.
I bet they’re really cute when they get stuck inside out.
Alt text: “crumple” is a funny word, but probably not in German.
Now what can that possibly mean.
The thanks are for you \/
Not funny in German? But “crumple” in German is zerknittern!
I guess he means that everything in German sounds like “crumple”.
It does seem a bit of a non-sequiter.
Speaking of non-sequiters…
“Crumple” comes from the 16th century German “krimpfan”, meaning “wrinkle”
…that’s as far as I got
Do they bounce on their feet?
No, that’s cats!
No, Cats always LAND on their feet. My dog is very bouncy when excited.
As a comment, i think king looks better without the back line delimitating the colors in his muzzle. also he looks like gizmo in the 3rd panel
.
I have been trying to pick out why he looks so off in the new style. Thanks for pointing it out. He is still cute, but the dark black really sticks out with his color scheme.
how sad, but she’s a resilient one. Clever title, too.
heartbeat…stopped…cuteness…*bleeeeeeeeeeeeee*
Maybe I should search that up…tomorrow
thanks for the text!
P.S.what happened with Rufus and the Cats and the horses (they had the most awesome names) and the indiferent cows and the chikens and the rest of the animals?
Poor them, makes me kinda sad face
Wrong farm, that was Peanut’s family not Fox and Bailey.
Thought nobody would notice it…
Epic Fail! DX
Is it just me or does Bailey kinda look pregnant in the first panel? To me, where King is rubbing looks like a baby bump o.O
I’m sure it’s just you =P He’s been on the phone with her the whole year.
Seconded. Let’s not get creepy. :3
Well the whole comic can be kinda creepy, if you think about it. Like that whole dog show or the arch about being naked. This whole comic is admitantly wierd and that’s what makes it good.

I agree with you she do’s look like she has a bump.
Oh, and allow me a note of national pride for once: As of yesterday, the 1942 law, which didn’t allow for pets in condos where the condos would say so have been canceled.

Ha….figures it would fix itself AFTER I comment about it *sigh*
It worked for me before you commented about it
You probably had the previous version of the page in cache.
oh, … new style. … seems to me not that nice like the style before that.
New style isn’t in effect yet.
um… actually it is

that’s kind of why Rick said he wasn’t ready to roll it out yet [but was doing so anyway]
Only thing I have to say about the new style (and I probably shoulda said this in the previous comic) is Fox looks a bit off now. But I’m sure it’ll grow on me. King still looks like King, and he’s still as cute as ever.
That’s Bailey, not Fox!
Oh, wait! You mean in the previous comic, right?
I said that I shoulda mentioned that in the previous comic because that’s when we last saw Fox. (The last time before that was June 20th, the “Housepets Playing Poker” one-off. I freakin’ Loooove that one. Contemplating getting the T-shirt (if it’s still available)).

But, glad to see you are back, Rick. I look forward to the continuation of the comic.
First ever comment on for this comic yay.
Poor bailey I feel sorry for her. However thing are going well for king, and she will make things better. Hopefully Duchess does show up again.
dem cuddles…
That Bailey is a tough one. :3
yeah, but with a tail sooooooo fluffeh!
Dogs have sharp fangs and fluffy bodies, what’s not to love about them?!
I so love them when they are puppies and want to bite you with those cute tiny teeth
I still don’t think that I (at least) would see much difference between a Housepets style dog or cat and an adopted child.
Besides… the apartment doesn’t allow dogs? Where else are they going to get a supervisor who can sniff out problems properly? It’s probably some sort of cat-spiracy there.
Then I suppose it comes down to your own biological prodgeny versus your adopted prodgeny.
Psst, Frank, p-r-o-g-e-n-y. No “d”.
(I don’t normally correct people, but you’re a rugged rodent, you can take it)
Or finding another apartment…
What’s with the sudden art style change since “We’ll leave a light on”?
Does it have to do with Rick being in the hospital? If so that just adds another reason I hope Rick feels better. The old style had so much flow and grace to it.
it has to do with the fact that this is the look Rick wanted since the start. he was just…practicing, so far
This is the new style, which Rick has been working towards for years. It’s here to stay.
Why do things have change just beacause the individual who made them all and has the right to alter them as they see fit says so?
I’ll give you a good reason: a streamlined design means the comic being delayed is now less likely! (Flow and Grace just doesn’t put deadlines on the table)
You can’t eat deadlines!
And here I was thinking you were going to make the joke on my use of “flow” and “grace” as first names
AWwwwww so cute and sweet.
thou if this is Pete’s doing.. it’s a nicer plan maybe.. He only needs a connection to king..
maybe getting the ferrets and king’s girlfriend on his… side,,, hey wait.. If Pete won… wouldn’t that make it so Bailey could live with her family no matter where they had a home?
(woah first time commenting).Anyway i love this page it showing that king and bailey relationship is growing i hate my spelling
*………i hate my spelling
That’s a terrible thing to happen during the holidays.
But AWWWWWWW, they’re snuggling. :3
all worth it for these snuggles!
Someone should put together a montage of all Housepets snuggles EVER
dangerous! Could cause massive meltdown!
Comic shows that a better Rights group is needed. They need militia freedom fighters.
I DO wonder, though, if the dogs in the housepets! universe have human or near human intelligence, why bdon’t they form their own societies? And are there big dissimilarities between our world’s history and the housepets! world history! Were there human versus animal wars?
http://www.housepetscomic.com/2010/11/02/housepets-7500-bc/
Danke schonn! I love plot and backround development!
Hey, is that an excerpt from an e-book from Rick that I don’t know about?
A well-regulated militia beeing necessary for the defense of the species, dogs’ right to bear arms shall not be infringed?
Bears can take care of their own arms.
And don’t forget their rights to supersoakers and opposable thumbs.
She’s with King so everything IS okay!
The Canadian Pointer is actually an American dog breed. = P
*facepalm* Oh wow, I’m SUCH an idiot.
Nah, it’s an easy thing to misunderstand. (Also, nobody is an idiot for one mistake, we’re all human, after all. :3)
Humanoid, anyway.
biologically challenged, please
Grrrrrr. When you have the kind of relationship where they call you “dad” then you shouldn’t be leaving them behind!
On the other hand, Bailey gets to live closer to King now, so that’s good.
Her tail is so FLUFFY!
IT’S SO FLUFFY AHM GONNA DIE!!!!
Would someone NOT think of the children?! Even if they are your own, human children are a lot easier to find than huskies, so by logic, huskies are worth moar!!!
It’s kind of interesting to me that King is now talking about the pet-owner relationship as if it should be equal to the child-parent relationship.
A bit of character development there–I doubt Joel would ever have thought of it like that.
I want to see King and Fatty in an argument over animal rights now.
Are we gonna see the return of the fat PETA guy or the old man who speaks in limericks? Or the evil Milton nephews? Or of any of the housepet owners?
We last saw the Milton Nephews in a dangling plot thread at the beginning of the Temple arc.
I’m wondering if they’re going to start showing up in single strips like that, in various places in the world, kind of like Thompson and Tompson tracking their forensic dowsing pendant all over the world in “Prisoners of the Sun”?

(I’d love to see a cameo of the llamas from that book…)
so he’s learning his lesson. And that was something Pete was aiming for.

A guy can dream, right?
How many types of aviator are there?
Subtle, Argent. Very subtle. You almost had me there.
Awesome! I have waited the whole time for this moment when King and Bailey returns!

But I am still very happy to see Bailey and King again! ^w^
Yay, we are focusing on King again
It looks hard to have a girlfriend that is WAY bigger than you.
I am not really liking the new style. Just my opinion
I didn’t like the first two strips, but this one works muck better. The thick lines were too sketchy and messy.
Augh. “much better”, not “muck better”. :p
that “snot” the right frase!
I know how that feels. >.< I was 5'2" and my girlfriend was 6'7" GAWD Dont feel bad King! ^-^
zerknittern means crumple in german…they were right not very funny
We have more word’s as only “zerknittern” for crumple in our language….
But yes it’s really not so funny in german
I think it’s kinda funny. Not nearly so, but still funny.
It’s funny if you imagine Peter Sellers saying it.
yeah but i dont speak german…google translate does it for me
how cute! he is rubbing her tummy!
anyway, I sense pete still wants to ruin King by doing bad things to Bailey
“Implicit Benevolence” rule.

did the comic start back up
Wait, wait, wait, Joplin MO? o_o duuuuude if that is near where this Web Comic is based that would be so cool, I live near Joplin
I’m I the only one who notice the coffee ( tea or whatever ) disapear after hug-time
She’s allowed to put things down and not have it be visible without being scene breaking.
So another example of animal lives being less valued than human ones. Pete promised equality, and is apparently still working on making King his avatar. Yet I don’t see King willingly working with Pete, and Pete is rather limited on what he can actually do at the moment. This will be worth watching.
Pretty funny… I guess.
Bailey: You so fluffy
I like this strip’s title. Foreshadowing?
Oooooo. You said something baaaad. Didn’t you read the post rules?
Sorry, tried to reply to someone here on my 3DS, but then it got stupid and posted it as a stand alone comment. >_<

Hopefully, that’s the reason behind most of these posts–what do each of us like or not like about the style. It gives us a way to influence Housepets 3.0 when that style debuts around Christmas time.
I personally like the lighter colors of the old style, but I’m trying to judge this style on its own merits
.
The style already debuted – you’re seeing it. Rick was referring to Housepets 3.0.
Ah. I guess I processed it as unfinalized style until HP3.0 comes out.
Thanks for the letting me know
(3ds) the coffee is gone during the hug
let’s just say that it would be awkward try and hug someone with a mug of coffee in your paws
well, in “hochdeutsch” it would resemble “zerknittern”, but you can also say “verkrumpeln” which I also find funny despite being a German word.
anyone else notice how he treats his ears like hair also i like the new panel style keep it up rick!
Is it just me, or does King seem to have more white on him than usual? XD Great job with this one though! I love the romance factor it has!
it’s the contrast, adding the lines separating the colors, thus adding to the impression.
Wow, that’s kinda sad but Bailey really knows how to think posetive>
hey, she got the KING of love all for her, everyday! Plus, an awesome neighborhood to live in.
What’s not to be positive about?
Living near Bino, but I digress.
squishy ears
I think people are being over critical over the art style change. The characters are still cute and the story still awesome, so lets let Rick explore. It is his Universe after all.
that is one impressive-looking hug Bailey’s giving out. King looks like he can’t escape

Am I the only one who noticed a belly buldge?
happens when one or both legs of a humanoid-shaped body are bent that way.
Look at the way she’s laying, it’s fine, not really a big deal.
Cutest thing ever.
That is all.
Overall, I like it–but it’s easier for me to point out the things that I don’t feel are absolutely positively as perfect as they could be
. In the end, however you decide to go is your decision, but I remembered that you asked for contributions last time you brought out new strips, and I see that you’ve taken the reader’s opinions to heart.
I love the title to this one. XD
Haven’t seen Bailey in a while.
Zerknittern. Nope, still a funny word.
What does it mean by “Bounce Back” I just don’t get ti,,,
It means that if an evil gryphon turns a dog into a football and starts kicking the dog/football around, the dog/football bounces back and hits the griphon in the face!
….. That’s one way to put it, I must say.
“They take a licking and keep on ticking.”
Bailey looks so cute in the last panel!
baileys tail is so funny
funny as in funny looking, or funny as in a great comedian? Or both?
Somethin’ tells me she’s hiding some of her emotions…
Am I the only one who much prefers this new style to the old one? It’s so much more consistent, efficient and stylised than the last.
King’s face in panel 3 made me daww so hard I almost fell out of my chair. X3
