Standing by and letting something happen though doesn’t make you an accessory to a crime. The rules of the game they played were also clear, GK isn’t responsible for what happened to king. How ever, once the rule was broken he did not decide to do any thing about it, despite being the mediator of the game.
_technically_ if they are all omniscient, or nearly so, then they all knew Pete was going to do it. Thus, they are all accessories, knowing he was going to steal the soul. And even Pete knew he was going to get caught. _IF_ any of them bothered to peek at the future. But where’s the fun in that?
NOOOOOOO!!!! XD What is it with John deLancie and Supernatural themes?! (In addition to his well-known roles, he also voiced Dr. Benton Quest on The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest.)
That’s not exactly that spectacular a thing to notice considering that:
A) Rick seems to have an in-depth knowledge of the game and
B) Pretty much every mythical creature ever has found it’s way into DnD at some point or another.
I think it’s more a “for the record” thing. It wouldn’t look too good if the record said “Court is now in session.
“Long pause.
“Court adjourned. Defendant found guilty.”
Though the design is slightly, at least the wheel is confirmed as being, based on Final Fantasy X’s Bahamut summon, I can see what you mean by looking like a Digimon.
Pete is such fanservice
And no, giving a hard time to King was part of the Game, apparently, as long as King retained his free will and his actions were not coerced.
Frankly, it is a widely accepted view among those who consider such things that there can be no such thing as more than one truly omniscient being, because it leads to all sorts of absurdities. For the sake of *all* of our sanity, it would be best to let that comment pass
Well, there’s always just the ‘divine powers are special’ clause, where things that are otherwise all-whatever do not affect other deities.
In this case, omniscient refers to being all-knowing regarding everything that isn’t inherently on the same ‘plane’ of power as themselves.
So, they can know everything that has or will happened, yet not know what Pete will do at any point.
Heck, they can even know what the consequences of his actions will be and still not know what he’ll do – for example, a different group of beyond-mortal beings (Pete hardly seems a god, after all, but they’re clearly beyond the realm of mortality, so I don’t know what to call them) might know that the major of a city will decide to stay home with his wife on such and such a date, yet not know it is the trickster of the group who convinced him to do so until they actually observe the event – it is generally accepted that divine beings cannot bring such observational knowledge backwards in time, even if thye are normally exempt from ordinary spacetime.
Looks to me that Rick made a slight change in Pete’s appearance but I suppose he has to be drawn smaller as to match all the other giant semi-existant beings.
Well, I read the comic, enjoyed it quite nicely (Nice one, Kitsune!), and then looked back at the dragon to try and figure out who it was.
Looked at him for a few minutes, looked behind him, saw the wheel, said “Is that Bahamut?”, looked at the tags, felt stupid for not looking in the first place, then felt excited for being right.
For me, it was more, “Dragon. Heaven dragon. We’ve had well known mystical creatures before and since it’s a big kahuna dragon, it’s got to be Bahamut or Tiamat, I can’t tell its gender. Since it’s Heaven (i.e. good), that’s got to be Bahamut. Can’t wait next comic to see if I’m right!” I later look down in the tags and squeal! I was RIGHT!
It’s for the benefit of all those mortals. They may be non-omnescient, but they seem to think otherwise. Hence, Heaven has to set a role model if there’s to be any hope of fair justice in the mortal world.
What drama? I mean come on King is happy with his girlfriend, living a life he never had, and lives with a pack of wolfs! What can be better then that!?
Not just FFX, every numbered FF game except 2. He’s also not a boss in X, except in the International version. Though, the wheel design did come from X.
Bahamut actually has roots that extend to long before Final Fantasy X, but he only really got dragonized (that’s definitely a word) in recent history. It does appear that FFX was an influence for this incarnation, however.
According to Wikipedia: “Bahamut (/bəˈhɑːmuːt/ bə-HAH-moot; Arabic: بهموت Bahamūt) is a vast fish that supports the earth in Arabian mythology. In some sources, Bahamut is described as having a head resembling a hippopotamus or elephant.”
Bahamut/Behemoth is a giant fish, later depicted as a sea serpent and then Garry [expletive deleted] Gygax decided to turn that into some kind of dragon thing. Which I never knew until I tried to figure out why a dragon was being called “bahamut” in this strip and googled it. (My D&D group used their own bestiary, not the silly TSR monsters)
Well, to be fair, Gygax’ talent lay in game-creation, not so much story-creation…
Thank him for having one of the more easy-to-use role-playing games, and one that while hardly ‘balanced’ is at least close enough to be fun.
Take his story-telling, module-making, and bestiary with a grain of salt <.<
Especially the modules.
Easy to use? Maybe compared to Chivalry and Sorcery or Empire of the Petal Throne. If you wanted “easy” you played Tunnels and Trolls. If you wanted clean and straightforward you played Runequest.
I’m still bitter about The Fantasy Trip. That was clean _and_ easy, and it got eaten in the Steve Jackson – Metagaming breakup.
As part of punishment, Pete will be turned into a housecat for indefinite time and send to Babylon Gardens to live with…….eh……Fox? One of Joel’s D&D friends (their table can have another)? Daisy?
Hahah Bahamut! That visor’s lookin’ pretty sweet, and it must be pretty awkward having a trial when you already know everything. Cerby got a lip piercing, and it’s looking nice too. Kitsune’s looking so smug, this comic really made my morning! Who else wants to see Pete take a Mega Flare to the face? Just me?
While the Judge has a visor made of silver, reminsicent of certain character— such as Cylons–
*slams desk, dramatic point*
He clearly does not have a smug attitude nor a coffee mug!
Does anyone else notice this weird thing happening in panel 2?
I seem to be seeing Pete’s arm sticking too far out. The lining of his chest suggests that he is angled towards a position that is only slightly tilted from being just looking straight ahead. The way that the Cerberus (sorry if I don’t know or forgot her name ) is holding is arm seems to be that she has either dislocated it or perhaps Pete is just that flexible.
Is this some sort of error or am I just out of my mind?
Don’t get me wrong, I love this art style. Sure there isn’t much shading compared to other web comics I read, but I love these vivid and pleasant colors. Even when the mood is clearly trying to portray sorrow or pain, the colors give a sort of childish feeling that minimizes the feeling of distress in order to…be great. Yeah, I kind of ran out of words there.
Crow: What’s with this omniscient thing? Would that come under the “Only-When-It’s-Funny” trope?
Servo: Maybe if you “know everything” you know not only what will happen, but everything that can possibility happen. Throw in free will and you have omniscient beings changing their minds about the future. Like Terry Pratchett’s Mrs. Cake, if you answer a question that has not yet been asked, you end up with a blinding headache if the other guy decides he no longer needs to ask the question. Therefore it is polite to act as if you are not omniscient.
Joel: I was thinking along the lines of the oracle in some other web comic who knew everything, but not all at once.
Bahamut must be obeyed. Also, I like that Great Kitsune appears to be the sole spectator. = P
Oh, huh. Well, this could be because nobody else cares what Pete does.
And sole commentator.
Just enjoying the show looks like it.
Does Pete look thinner?
Probably because he slimmed down while in prison.
hes not the sole spectator there’s Cerberus too even if Cerberus is as girl xD
Cerberus is a guard, not a spectator. = P
Kitsune’s grinning like a shot fox.
‘Witness’ is more like it. Since GK didn’t exactly do much to prevent the theft, and in fact could even be considered an accomplice of Pete.
Its possible they both get in trouble for this since its true he did kind of let him do it.
But who says Heaven counts assisting a criminal as a crime?
Standing by and letting something happen though doesn’t make you an accessory to a crime. The rules of the game they played were also clear, GK isn’t responsible for what happened to king. How ever, once the rule was broken he did not decide to do any thing about it, despite being the mediator of the game.
_technically_ if they are all omniscient, or nearly so, then they all knew Pete was going to do it. Thus, they are all accessories, knowing he was going to steal the soul. And even Pete knew he was going to get caught. _IF_ any of them bothered to peek at the future. But where’s the fun in that?
By that logic Bahamut’s an accessory too.
Pete sure looks snazzy that jerk!!! :3
Hey, isn’t Q supposed to be here?
YOU FORGOT Q!!!!!
He couldn’t make, he’s busy watching his kid or he got turned to stone or something.
Is it bad that I knew exactly what you meant by both of those situations?
Ya know, for now on I’ll be imagining Pete voiced by John de Lancie. XD
NOOOOOOO!!!! XD What is it with John deLancie and Supernatural themes?! (In addition to his well-known roles, he also voiced Dr. Benton Quest on The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest.)
I was already imagining Pete voiced by Jonathan Harris.
somehow I thought of Dylan McDermott
Wow, I haven’t seen any of his movies.
You rang?
That dragon just ate part of the fourth wall.
Also, hasn’t every mythical creature shown so far been part of DnD at some point?
That’s not exactly that spectacular a thing to notice considering that:
A) Rick seems to have an in-depth knowledge of the game and
B) Pretty much every mythical creature ever has found it’s way into DnD at some point or another.
Speaking of, where’s the spirit dragon?
She’s busy being in love with a low-order being.
I bet she’s the Prosecution
I think it’s more a “for the record” thing. It wouldn’t look too good if the record said “Court is now in session.
“Long pause.
“Court adjourned. Defendant found guilty.”
Pete is awesome as charged!
this!
Bahamut looks pretty cool I have to say. and lol nice to see Kitsune back there
Bahamut? Bahamut is a giant fish.
These days, plastic surgery does miracles
In heaven!
ORDER IN THE COURT CAUSE–
aw never mind. You already did the joke.
Bahamut, you just stole my heart.
Kinda looks like a digimon.
Though the design is slightly, at least the wheel is confirmed as being, based on Final Fantasy X’s Bahamut summon, I can see what you mean by looking like a Digimon.
Pete’s definitely looking cuter than usual. Of course Mr. Griffin would give the griffin special consideration outside the 4th wall.
Guilty until proven guilty? So it was okay for Pete to torment King until he went up to steal his Fate?
Pete is such fanservice
And no, giving a hard time to King was part of the Game, apparently, as long as King retained his free will and his actions were not coerced.
Oh Pete, so observant you are.
Wait… how can they not see him pulling that card if they’re omni?
AHA! CAUGHT YOU!
You should stop before you pop a vessel.
Frankly, it is a widely accepted view among those who consider such things that there can be no such thing as more than one truly omniscient being, because it leads to all sorts of absurdities. For the sake of *all* of our sanity, it would be best to let that comment pass

They may already know whether Pete’s guilty without having to go through any sort of trial, but appearences are important!
“You can see everything before it happens?”
“Yeeees! Everything!”
“Ah-ah-ah-ah! Everything, Merlin?”
“Uh… no, not everything“
Woh heven judge looks epic!
Looks to me that Rick made a slight change in Pete’s appearance but I suppose he has to be drawn smaller as to match all the other giant semi-existant beings.
I noticed that too. He looks a little lankier, and I think his beak is smaller.
shapeshifters’ advantages
Is the Judge a dragon?
*shot*
Nevermind, I figured it out.
I wanna see some Objections going about! xD
Present > Evidence > Pete’s Testimony
TAKE THAT!
This ought to be fun! xD
I just realized – the judge is wearing a futuristic goggle-thing! Is he a coffee lover, too?
I looks like a Star Trek visor.
*It
http://objection.mrdictionary.net/go.php?n=5769188
Is this enough, OBJECTION?
Very nicely put. ^^
Lol! Every court trial should have a kitsune in the peanuts gallery..
lol, love how kitsune is just sitting back and enjoying all of this. :3
Thank goodness for Final Fantasy X.
Whooo! And Rick confirms the FFX inspiration! My recognition was correct!
Wait… if they already know if someone is guilty or not (omniscient), then what’s the point of a trial, let alone a Judge? My brain hurts again…
So we can hear the story that’s why.
Way to ruin the drama, man!
It’s for the benefit of all those mortals. They may be non-omnescient, but they seem to think otherwise. Hence, Heaven has to set a role model if there’s to be any hope of fair justice in the mortal world.
Procedure. It’s always about procedure.
Lol.
I am curious to what happens next now.
i kinda am to
Me three! ^^
me 18,900,365
i want to see more of the cerberus
there might be more of Cerberus in the future
say how did you guys get your pictures?
It’s explained by the link next to ‘NAME’ on the comments where it says ‘Get an avatar’.
What drama? I mean come on King is happy with his girlfriend, living a life he never had, and lives with a pack of wolfs! What can be better then that!?
And a love whip + a pink handcuffs.
omg I completely forgot about that lol!!!
Smug Kitsune looks smug.
Who’s Bahamut?
That’s Bahamut
Aren’t you clever.
He’s the dragon boss from Final Fantasy X Rick decided to make him look even more epic with some changes of course!
I like the word “dragonize”……it’s a valid describtoin and happened a lot recently……
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bahamut_(Dungeons_%26_Dragons)
According to Wikipedia: “Bahamut (/bəˈhɑːmuːt/ bə-HAH-moot; Arabic: بهموت Bahamūt) is a vast fish that supports the earth in Arabian mythology. In some sources, Bahamut is described as having a head resembling a hippopotamus or elephant.”
It may or may not be related to Behemoth.
I would just like to note that “God”’s design is [approving non-PG expletive] amazing.
Hey makes a good point.
oh pete you witty guy
well, this will be interesting :3
I hope the defendant’s lawyer isn’t a Phoenix…
Ooooh! That’d be awesome to see!
No Pete avatar yet?
…And my Gravatar just refuses to work.
Oh it works now! Em let’s see……
I’ve heard the name Bahamut before, but I don’t remember where.
The Bible?
DnD?
Final Fantasy?
Bahamut/Behemoth is a giant fish, later depicted as a sea serpent and then Garry [expletive deleted] Gygax decided to turn that into some kind of dragon thing. Which I never knew until I tried to figure out why a dragon was being called “bahamut” in this strip and googled it. (My D&D group used their own bestiary, not the silly TSR monsters)

I’m still bitter about The Fantasy Trip. That was clean _and_ easy, and it got eaten in the Steve Jackson – Metagaming breakup.
Now where did I put my copy of OGRE?
For some reason I always thought that a Behemot was some kind of land monster that God cursed with heavy horns so that it may never look up to Him.
Or something.
I don’t even know where I heard this o0
And for the Prosecution… Mr. Doom Train!
I like the way he walks up to the stand and says” whats up”
How can anyone stay mad at Pete? he’s such a cutie!
As part of punishment, Pete will be turned into a housecat for indefinite time and send to Babylon Gardens to live with…….eh……Fox? One of Joel’s D&D friends (their table can have another)? Daisy?
So much promise…
Joel? You mean Joey?
Oh yes, that’s a typo; thanks.
I vote that Pete should be sent out to perform random acts of goodwill. He’d HATE that, methinks.
“Your first task is to make Tiger stop being neurotic without using magic!”
“What? That’s impossible!”
“DO NOT ARGUE WITH THE COURT!”
Just me?
Pete is too genre savvy for his own good.
Funny how one Cerberus neck has a collar and another doesn’t. For now, we have to wonder about the third.
methinks that neck are would become really awkward with three spiked collars on it. (and i bet those other two heads bit hard enough to compensate!)
I worry about the spikes biting into the other necks.
I sense a Pheniox Wright reference coming up…
OBJECTION!
*shakes head*
*beeps while speaking*
While the Judge has a visor made of silver, reminsicent of certain character— such as Cylons–
*slams desk, dramatic point*
He clearly does not have a smug attitude nor a coffee mug!
http://objection.mrdictionary.net/go.php?n=5770452
There you go. ^^
the great kitsune is surely enjoying the show lol
I agree with him, I hate when people ruin the drama with such observations
I love how the Kitsune is acting completely relaxed with a big “Told ya so” grin in Panel 2. It’s as if he knew all this would happen! XD
Bahamut has a good point.
Lol now that I think about it I keep reading the red talk bubble with the same voice as that hippie guy from Cars. XD
LOL
Why is Pete so likable? Also “What’s up?” is a great way to greet a judge isn’t it?
There’s this film where the defendant greets Your Honor with “Hey there! How are the kids?”
so, King are we going to be seeing King related arc?
Does anyone else notice this weird thing happening in panel 2?

It may be on a uncomfortable position but i dont think is out of limits.
This arc really seems to lower pete from the all powerfull evil being that he once was.
Almost-all powerful and a bit of a jerk.
“semi-phenomenal, nearly cosmic powers”?
Oh dear. Are they going to sentence him to itty-bitty living space?
So all rick had to do to make him not seem powerful was find someone more powerful than him?
I can only hear Bahamut in the voice of Kevin Michael Richardson… seconds, anyone? >>;
James Earl Jones.
Seconded.
Regardless, the voice of a deep-voiced black man. (>.> No racial insults intended – I’ve never heard a white man with a voice like either of theirs.)
Crow: What’s with this omniscient thing? Would that come under the “Only-When-It’s-Funny” trope?

Like how chill Kitsune is in the back
i JUST notice kitsune (i think thats his name was i right?) back there after looking at this to figure who was the red bubble for like 20 minutes o.O
I dunno you guys but i think the judge looks too awesome to be a judge xD
trying to get ma avatar to work…..
