    Yush more Spo! ^^

    • Tynach

      Moar Spo!

I must admit I’m interested in meeting his sibblings, such as Spp.

Also, for me, the alt text is what made the comic X3

      • Kohaku Nightfang

How very ironic that alt text is lol. I think ironic is the proper word choice here

        • Kohaku Nightfang

I meant the comic not the alt text oops. I’m sick, leave me alone rar. I was commenting on the ten years thing when thinking how old that mouse has to be. Although that alt text is funny rofl

  2. IceKitsune

Yay more Spo and up close again too.

  3. senorpie7

Lesson kids: read a book… cartoons these days are horrid at best

    • nyathetexascat

don’t watch cartoon, read more housepts!

    • Ryufire

90’s cartoons were the best hands down!

      • The face

i feel this way too! They were quality animation!

      • Argent Stonecutter

The best were the classic Looney Tunes from the 40s and 50s. Back when they were still figuring the medium out.

        • volkoseba

Speaking of 40’s animation… well, I only need one word: Fantasia.

          • The Wolf Kin

Correct. Disney at his finest. What he wanted to do with that film was so far ahead of his time. 3D, surround sound, environmental effects (water spray, wind, etc), but it would be too costly on the theaters. He then took it to his shows in the Disney parks.

Too bad they never did it for Fantasia.

            Seriously, brilliant cartoon.

          • duke

the really cool/sad thing about fantasia, was that it was supposed to be a series, they would release a new movie every year or so with new music/animation, and keep a few of the old classics. sadly with the first one not selling well, and fantasia 2000 even worse then idea fell through.

        • Perfesser_Bear

Y’okay… Just remember that the earlier Warner Brothers cartoons were not made for kids. They were used as filler for adult and serial cartoons.

      • Valerio

        give me ’80’s animes ANYTIME!

      • Little Puppy

They were pretty cool but I much prefer 80s cartoons.

        • crazyBalto

Cartoons from 90’s or older are the best! That’s it!

      • Argent Stonecutter

        Darkwing Duck was pretty awesome.

    • volkoseba

No, don’t read a book… if you read a book these days, it might be Twilight. Then what would you do?

      • xhunterko

        ‘Smile’ or ‘Teenboat’ anyone?

      • nyathetexascat

Arrrgh! Twilight is meant to be used as emergency toilet paper, and I’m just making fun of that book because everyone else does.

        • volkoseba

“The room was familiar; it had been belonged to me since I was born.” -Page 9

        • Spiritwolf15

Any book from the Twilight series used as T.P. is an insult to T.P. …

For me cartoons from the mid 80’s to late 90’s were the best, they were of such higher quality than the trash that is on TV now.

As for the comic, it’s as good as ever, keep it up Rick.

          • Neromon

The T.P. will forgive as long as the book suffers…. >:D

      • Tailz

Any kind of cartoon up to the ‘00 era was great, especially Pokemon, Dexter’s Lab, and Lonney Toons.

    • The face

I was the kid who say in the corner, her face jammed into a book. As far as I was concerned, Harry Potter was my only friend

    • Jackalope121

you better watch it. i can think of atleast one cartoon people might watch religiously

    • darkgloomie

That’s… that’s a horrid oversimplification that does not give justice to the rare yet enjoyable cartoon that actually airs these days.

    • roguebfl

Um have you seen today’s cartoons? Likr Avatasr the Last Airbender or My Little Pony : Freindship is Magic? the cream of the crop is better than ever.

      • Cannon Fodder

        I haven’t seen avatar, but I hear it’s a good show.

Also my little pony: friendship is magic is absolutely awesome.

      • Air

I thought someone would say something about MLP. It is better than most cartoons right now.
But I’d have to say I grew up loving Looney Tunes, Ed Edd N’ Eddy, The Grim Adventures of Billy And Mandy, and Invader Zim; those were good cartoons.

    • Campy

There are still some decent shows on. Adventure Time and Regular Show anyone?

      • Smuggler

Oohhhhhhh! Regular Show is awesome! x3

      • Kohaku Nightfang

        Worst of the worst anyone?

    • Erikuto

Or anime… Lol I read a fair bit of stories online too so that counts ._.

    • silverfang16

I am definitely a book reader, though if I am watching anything it’s anime.

    • Kohaku Nightfang

I agree that more books should be read. Hunger Games and Lord of the Rings for the win. Also most cartoons ’90s and before win and only MLP and avatar are good now. When discussing non-American shows then anime is still awesome

  4. The face

Well then. Spo certainly has issues with cartoons. Has he considered 60’sspiderman?

  5. cheetahwolf

does the TV really have to be listed? ;l
    it doesnt have a line

    • xhunterko

Yes. I’m pretty sure that every strip that a TV has been in, it’s been listed.

  6. xhunterko

    Huh. Who’d a thunk it?

  7. kztxl7

Digimon/Pokemon and plenty of other TV shows in a nutshell.

    • Sansash

I thought of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Also Captain Planet.

      • Valerio

        yup! Captain Planet, most definitely

        • Ryufire

Agreed, and The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest!

          • KleptoKat

You remember that too? One word: Toonami.

          • The_Rippy_One

            TOONAMI!
            *remembers the end*
            CN, What have you wrought!?

      • Ada

“They haven’t been on this planet for any more than ten years…”

Avatar: Toph, the youngest is Twelve.
        Captain Planet: All teens.

      • The Wolf Kin

Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, the TV show version.

  8. Yehoshua

Alt: if you like it then you shoulda hung a lampshade on it

And I am not always condescending when I’m right!

    • Sansash

No more Beyonce refs Rick please :P

    • Argent Stonecutter
      • Sansash

I can see how there might be a lampshade hang here, but I have never noticed any of these animals show any prowess in hacking or engineering (well, except maybe the Tanuki)

        • Rick Griffin

Hint: It’s about the stuff besides superpowers

          • Sansash

            Yeah, I got that.

    • Yehoshua

Is it sad that my longest thread was only because I posted the alt first? I’m going with yes and by going with yes, I shall now weep in a corner.

  9. Cristian100n

Why does Spo complain so much?

    • Rick Griffin

      Because he likes complaining

      • Yehoshua

Complaining is fun, it allows one to see the bad parts of life and think of how to fix them only to never bother fixing them until one remembers said complaints many years later.

      • Xane

He has a very tiny complex.

        • Keldor

Quite a large very tiny complex, in fact.

    • efhosci

Complain complain is all he did.
I finally had to close the lid.

    • Dissension

Why not complain so much, hmm?

    • Valerio

because he’s the one with some brains

    • thefirstonethere

complaining about complainers makes you a hippo. dont be a hippo

  10. nyathetexascat

Bino looks quite thin, and I think his arm has shrunked… I need more sleep

    • Gary (from Radio Free Housepets!)

      That’s Fido.

      • P0lo

Nya needs a lot more sleep!

      • GrapeFan

I second Gary’s comment, that is Fido, but I also agree with Nya, in the sense that Fiso’s arm does seem skinny in this strip.

        • darkgloomie

Well, he can’t very well look very buff, especially in every strip, now can he?

          • Xane

Boy, Spo sure is looking closer today, even moreso than usual!

  11. efhosci

So why does Spo keep watching it? Probably because he can’t reach the remote, but still.

  12. Valerio

    …aaand that’s why Fido is reading a book ;)

    • Ryufire

And the only books that Bino reads are strategy guides!

      • GrapeFan

Strategy Guides fall to Joey, Bino is just the mean one, no more, no less

      • Valerio

        No, that’s Joey.
        Bino reads the Mein Kampf

        • Keldor

Very definitely. I wonder if Bino would also like something along the lines of Atlas Shrugged? Probably too many pages for him.

  13. Sansash

I wonder if it’s exhausting for Spo to generate a speech bubble ten times the size of his own body

    • dibs

he’s had lots of practice, he built up high endurance

    • darkgloomie

lol. WHY THERE ISN’T A LIKE BUTTON HERE?!

    • Keldor

Spo has always had an amazingly loud voice, given the size of his lungs.

  14. *White fang*

Thats why i like spo he speaks his own opinion and no ones elsecan change that

  15. Valerio

Spo should have a talk with Lester…

  16. Draco_2k

[Comment] acknowledging [Trope name]. [General agreement].

  17. Valerio

Huh, so pets get to watch economic tube TV sets

    • Argent Stonecutter

Cats have been lobbying against flatscreens because they’re impossible to sleep on top of.

      • Draven

I beg to differ. I’ve seen cats defy the laws of physics, even to the point of sleeping on top of a flatscreen TV. It was rather silly to see.

        • Valerio

I’m fairly sure cats could sleep on walls like Velcro

  18. John willow

I have a feeling he is talking about Ben 10, but then he didn’t mention anything about the terrible dialogue.

  19. SleepySandMan

FIdo looks different…..AH! HIS SUNGLASSES!!! =O

    • Xane

He’s not wearing his regular glasses either. Contacts? Spo would be helpful in finding dropped ones! “Spo! I dropped it aga…” “NO!” “If you don’t help I’m feeding you Velveeta tonight!” “…grr.”

  20. filmperson

This is shockingly similar to how I approach most cartoons….

  21. Tailz

If funny to see whenever Spo talks he’s takes up an entire panel because he talks so much.

  22. QuartzOrren

I think Fido would tell Spo to be quiet, but that would lead to Spo ranting about why he doesn’t need to shut up. Anyone?

    • Argent Stonecutter

I didn’t ever say a word that time! I know when to shut up! I’m not the one to keep blabbing when someone tells me to shut up, Some people dont know when to stop, but when I’m told to shut up I shut up. I dont keep on talking like some people! I know what shut up means!

  23. Xane

What makes me sad is the all-but-death of traditional cel animation for TV animation. Granted, a lot of it was terrible (you could tell which studio did particular episodes of Talespin depending on how deformed Don Karnage was) but a lot of Flash cartoons produced by an entire crew of professionals look worse than a lot of solo projects on the Internet (of course there’s a lot of horrible animation on the internet too). Flash itself isn’t bad, I’ve seen Flash animation that you couldn’t tell wasn’t cel, but so many cartoons these days look incredibly lazily animated. Also they’re still doing that “edgy” character design thing that started in the ’90s, unless you do it very well you end up with monstrosities like that ugly dog from Johnny Test.

As far as the actual content, just remember you’re probably remembering your nostalgia with rose-tinted shades. It’s marketed to kids, it’s almost never going to sound intelligent or funny once you’re older, aside from the rare gems like Animaniacs, which requires a very creative writing staff. A lot of shows try for this and fail, a lot of others don’t bother and just go for entertaining the kids.

    • Argent Stonecutter

Plus “limited edition cels” made specifically for collectors are not in any way the same as actual cels from the actual cartoon.

    • Yehoshua

      Don’t. Diss. On. Dukey.

      • Xane

Hah, I knew one of the puppies around here would chime in on some part of that. I actually like Dukey as a character but his design is hideous, and I think it may have been partly intentional (they upgraded his brain because he was so gross).

  24. Billy MT

Whoever watch TV for cartoons these days? Kids watch Pocoyo (sp?) on Youtube and then be done with it XD At least so acts all the kiddies here in the neighborhood

  25. Shuma Jindivi

Firstly, could anyone show me the alt text?

Secondly, I don’t think any of the housepets are older than ten……

    • Rick Griffin

I’d like to congratulate you on being the first person to catch the meta-joke

      • Argent Stonecutter

At least the first person to post a spoiler.

        • Rick Griffin

Well sure, but that helps affirm ME in my endeavor to make subtle jabs at myself

          • Xane

This does bring up some interesting thoughts, not the least of which is that the pets must be smarter than the humans if they mature quickly enough to act at least like much older teenagers/20-somethings (and how old was Rufus anyway?) at an average age of 4. :D

          • Argent Stonecutter

OK, well, I saw it, I thought it was cool, and figured that pointing to the TVTropes page on Lampshade Hanging was was a sufficiently subtle response. :)

          • thefirstonethere

            ALL HAIL

      • Yehoshua

Oh so there WAS a joke there? I saw it but simply didn’t mention it in case it was unintentional.

      • Shuma Jindivi

I’m honored. Now please, anyone, show me the alt text…

  26. KidChimera00

I have this problem not with cartoons, but with the live-action tv shows Nickelodeon and Disney Channel used to replace good shows.

  27. FerreTrip

Wow, Spo. I never thought about that. *makes sure to avoid doing such bad characterization and such in his stories*

And yeah, seriously, cartoons these days…don’t get me started.

  28. Grip the Wolf

Ten year old kids who know how to hack? Mother of God…

  29. Frostfauna

Yeah, its true. Most cartoons now can’t compare to the good old fashioned ones. The Chuck Jones and Hannah Barbara cartoons were awesome. Spo had a nice little rant there though. Bravo, SPO, bravo.

  30. Draven

I enjoy seeing the world through the eyes of Spo, he always makes things interesting. The world through the eyes of Spo. Hmm, that sounds like a comic in itself.

    • Yehoshua

I read your comment but all I understand (thanks to Spo) is “I like cheese.”

  31. Profesor Rod

Lately there have been so little good stuff in cartoons. The only thing I’m following is My Little Pony. That thing is surprisingly well written!

    • legendario13

Is really as good as everybody says. Would you recomend it ?

      • The_Rippy_One

It is generally better written than what you would expect, given that a tv exec for Hasbro okay’d it. A lot of the episodes are very well done. This does not mean that every episode is great, or that you will necessarily enjoy it in general. I will say that I do enjoy more than half of the episodes, and that the general lack of an idiot ball (except maybe the one Hasbro occasionally carries) is nicely refreshing.

        • legendario13

I’ll see if a can find some episodes on youtube

  32. legendario13

Is Spo more grumpy every time or is just the fact that he’s really anoyed?

    • ResCoin999

do not blame Spo, blame the Mice’s Republic for making him that way.

      • legendario13

Oh no, nononnonononono, i dont blame them, i would rather thank them!

I like how Spo thinks, i was just saying hes a little more grumpy this time.

  33. Oren Otter

    replace “kid” with “animal”.

  34. Alucai Vivorvel

Nobody has mentioned Sonic the Hedgehog (SATAM) yet?
    What’s wrong with you lot?!
Seriously. I haven’t even watched the whole series, and I can tell you, that was one of the best cartoons ever made (that had a story with it, anyway). While it could be considered a kid’s show, it had some mature themes. Kind of like Spongebob, but that’s an insulting comparison. (While great for kids, I honestly can’t stand its cheesiness and silliness. Mind you, I’m lactose intolerant. ;) )
The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog was made for kids, and, while I haven’t watched it yet, it was the origin of the “Pingas” meme, so it must be awesome.

  35. 1boredcanadian

Anybody who wants to write a tv show, game, etc. It’s easy, just make tropes and let them bounce off each other…At least that is the easy (but uncreative and sometimes boring) way…And morals, what are those?

  36. Chazmeister242

Hmmm….anything about 80’s cartoons spark your memory rick?

  37. Keldor

“How can you be right if you’re not condescending?!”

I see Spo has been watching a little too much Bill Maher… e.e

  38. Marine Pina Urrútia

Out of the ordinary information. Credit on behalf of the info!

  39. Bob

Fido,. you have a girlfriend… Why are you hanging out with a mouse…?

On the subject of cartoons, there have always been those that are awesome, those that absolutely suck, and those that are somewhere in between… The 80s and 90s spurned their own suckfests, such as just about everything that was based off a movie… Just about every popular movie spurned a cartoon series that seemed like it was screen-written by drunk and retarded monkeys… At the same time in this age, we have absolutely awesome cartoons such as Adventure Time, My Little Pony Friendship is Magic, the 2011 reboot of ThunderCats, and Regular Show…

  40. Grimlock88

90’s and older cartoons are the ones I prefer to watch over today’s cartoons which are nothing but GARBAGE!!!

I grew up with 90’s cartoons and TV shows as a kid and really miss them.

Also great comic I really enjoy the characters, the crazy adventures they find themselves in and I once had a dog named PB as a kid. Sadly she had to be put down after biting someone.
