That was probably irrelevant to the story he was telling.
Rick snuck that close-call alligator attack in just for the mind games.
Perhaps a Housepets Babies 2 will address how Max lost part of his ear and broke up with Sabrina And how Sabrina got together with Fido. Or perhaps it’’s just like the noodle indecent in Calvin and Hobbes and will never know. I think the biggest problem is making it unpredictable.

i think sometimes it depends on the angle too, it isn’t always as obvious as other times

There’s several books in the series, and it takes a year or two to write a book, so he’s been a published author for at least ten years.
Wait when was it established hes been published for 10 years? I don’t think its been said that there are more then 3 Pridelands books at most. Hes older then Grape for sure but I don’t think by that much.
Yeah, I don’t think Res is meant to be that old. He’s just a gray cat who’s shy so he talks quietly.
Grape said something about it being 2-3 years since the last book, and peanut grabbed a massive stack of books when they were at the book signing.
Here she says the 3rd book is out http://www.housepetscomic.com/2009/03/16/book-smarts/ and there was one more after that so there are 4 books right now. The books Peanut picked up where reference books/companion guides and an RPG book and the other two in the series.
Res is much older then I thought, at least 5 or 6 I would say depending on when he started writing. Grape seems to have a thing for older guys.
Even if it’s only four books, that means he’s been a published writer for at least five or six years. Longer if it took 2-3 years for the third book. He can’t be less than ten.
No where does it say that the third book to 2-3 years for him to write, unless I’m missing it. We don’t know how long it takes him to write the books. He could have wrote the first two books within a year of each other maybe even less.
The first Pridelands book came out when Grape was still a kitten.
I suspect that Res is about the age Grape’s parents are. Not old, but not exactly young either. Middle age.
And it doesn’t always take a year or two to write a book, depending on the length and complexity of the novel. Some writers can pump one out in a few months, and I don’t think Pridelands series are actually that complex.

I liked it too. I don’t mind that Rick held off on revealing how Max lost part of his ear because I realize that if their is a Housepets Babies 2 it can reveal the origin of Fido and Sabrina’s relationship and how Max and her broke up.
We’ll probably have to wait till next year or by the end of the year for Housepets Babies 2! But in the meantime we’ll enjoy what Rick has in store for us!

Arc 23?
Yes well, Fate has a funny way of changing…Or being a Giant D and D game.
Usally in a series the female character goes through several major boyfriends before ending up with the guy the fans want her to be with. However I’d be fine with just Grape + Res.
Usually? I find in fiction it’s usually the first choice. I’m not saying i’m against Res since he has a good reason to do so, but Max certainly was the first cat that had the biggest reason to date her.
Sure, he’s a jerk and we all know it, but he means well for Grape.
To give example in the Harry Potter series both Harry and Ron have interest in other women before they end up with the girls they end up marrying that everyone was wishing for. In about every TV show that does some romantic comedy that how it works ex. Scrubs, Friends, New Girl hopefully. Just trying to elaborate. Just because Grape dates someone else doesn’t lessen Peanuts chances. Although I’d be fine with whoever Grape ended up with.
I always loved the first choice matters the most deal from watching cartoon shows. Samurai Pizza cats and Gargoyles are prime examples of this. The idea of someone picking you up without a heartbeat at first sight is usually the strongest connection and i loved that with Maxwell and Grape. Although it was awhile before we found out that Maxwell had an ex, it still follows through with Grape that Max is her first date and i wish to see it follow through think through thin. Res is likely going to be the first big challenge though of the relationship or the hammer, and i’m hoping for the challenge.
Charmed, don’t forget Charmed King Sandwhich; Piper, Pheobie, and Paige go through a LOT of relationships before finding the right guy, lesser and more serious relationships. Even Prue went through her fair share of relationships before being taking off the show.
@Gamecobra, if you say the first choice matters the most, shouldn’t that mean the Grapenut would be best choice then? Peanut’s crush came before Maxwell was even introduced, unless you’re talking about solely on Grape’s point of view.
@Crackles The first choice rule i go by is this: If either person in the couple who never dated before asks to start a serious relationship/date with someone, then it’s usually at that point the first rule effect is in place. In this case, since Grape asked Maxwell out, Maxwell and Grape would’ve been the respective first choice dates.
If Peanut got his chance back on the farm arc, he would’ve been the first choice date instead. Even though i would really want Max to date Grape sinec they are both cats, the fact that one of them got the courage to spark the relationship is a good enough reason for me to support it. Since Grape is having her first date with Max, I really wanna see it fully develop through thick and thin, marriage and kittens and all! <3
I think it is clear their are many possibilities of who Grape could ultimately end up with. The problem with Grape + Peanut is it eliminates the possibility of Grape kittens. I understand there are still people who want it though.

Someone still believing it could happen? Well I guess optimism isn’t a bad thing.
I doubt Rick will simply dish out complex, foreshadowing dialogue like its flaming confetti. It’ll be brought back full force like a bucket of ice water on my sleeping body.
Maybe. Still would expect at least some shiptease from time to time so it wouldn’t feel abandoned. What’s it been, like, almost two years since last time?
Well, there was that one time in Arc 43 when Grape went for the dramatic, last words death after being struck by a water balloon. But that was more of a joke with a slight aftertaste of shiptease. Other than that, maybe you could count “Red Red Wine” from this arc.
Of course, with those final words, she “died” before she could finish them. Couldn’t bring herself to say it? >:-D

Well, it’s kinda obvious that fates aren’t set in stone, and perhaps, maybe, theres a chance…*mumbles* Grape could end up with someone else…But, I still and Grapenut 100%(Just gonna be sad when all of Grapes love interests stop due to reasons from one arc or another)

Ohhh. You’re worried that the prophecies may not follow through. But you also seem to be assuming that the prophecies are pro-Grapenut. They are more about foreshadowing and a lot of shipteasing.

If Grapenut happens, that means all other love interests got rejected riiighht? So it follows, that these rejections will be teary and drama filled. And I’ll feel bad for it wanting to happen, while Max/Res is stuck in the rain again…

At this point really only two things will kill it for me, Rick saying its never going to happen or Pete not picking Max as his avatar.
If rick says its never going to happen, I’ll rage for about a week, then I’ll be pro Grape+Res.
An odd way of putting it. Why would Max not being chosen kill Grapenut for you?
Mostly because I can’t really think of a reason for them to break up other wise. Unless Grape does a 180 on her feelings about Pete, him being his Avatar would pretty much do just that fairly quickly. I doubt Res is going to become a regular character so the only real other choice is Peanut.
Just throwing it out there, if it happens, maybe there will be a fallout in their relationship similar to Max’s and Sabrina’s. That could actually be fitted into an arc, in my opinion, showing before-and-now events.
Personally, I see Grape and Res as a better couple (You know, if Grapenut is said to never happen). Idk why, I just do :/.
Also I will admit that while I can’t think of another reason right now, it is possible that Rick could do it another way without him becoming Pete’s Avatar. So its not like him not being Pete’s Avatar would make it 100% impossible just that it would make it so very very unlikely that hoping it would happen would be rather stupid IMO.

Sure, anything can happen. I can definetly see a falling out between Grape and Max. Problem: If it starts raining, and Max’s dad kicks him out again, she’ll forgive him, and everything will go back to normal XD
Argh! What am I going to do with you? And what kind of father kicks his kid out in the rain? “Oh it’s getting cloudy, come on Max!” Plus that is far too simple of a resolution that would make for a pointless, mind-rending arc. Might as well draw a circle.

I mean, there’s plenty of evidence to support it, and you never know when an opportunity will arise. Before this, I might not have thought Gres was feasible, yet the evidence is impeccable in this strip.
I never said it wasn’t plausible I just said I thought it was likely at this point, like you said things arise that are not thought to feasible earlier. I think if it does happen it will be awhile that’s all. Not trying to spoil any dreams just trying to be realistic as to avoid disappointment.

Yeah, a bit sad. If that’s the case, I can’t really praise how the Imagine, too! would work as the final conclusion to the whole ordeal. Cute maybe, but terribly unsatisfying status quo.
Not really, It pushed Gres that’s about it. It’s seems to be kind of neutral on Grapenut.
So…Res is a genial and genuine nice guy who admires Grape’s accomplishments. Oh, and he created the character that Grape fan-crushes on…HARD.

It’s really odd to see Grape/Res as a viable ship, because until like ten strips ago, I was unaware that Res was a dude. Still going to have to say Grapenut for the win.
It does feel a bit out of nowhere but remember that meeting Res is like meeting [insert your favorite author here], first you’re shell shocked [and possibly cause a scene ending with you chewing out his mom], and then you find out he still wants to be friends with you… and he says all those nice things about you…

This arc has been fantastic and informative and I love it. As for this strip, all I have to say is that when Res was starting to get all tender in the third panel (and the low-key, feel-good saxophone ballad started playing in my head) I began to think that grape might just be the star of some kind of Housepets! The Bachelorette.
But that’s just me! Rick, you continue to be every bit as masterful a storyteller as we assume Res to be. Thank you kindly! ^^
