In the first Resident Evil game one of the characters you can play is named Jill, and there is a part where she almost gets smashed by a lowering ceiling, and Barry the one who saves her says that she was almost a Jill Sandwich.
It’s a reference to Resident Evil. Jill Valentine narrowly escapes being crushed, and there’s a cheesy (and now iconic) line about her almost becoming a Jill sandwich.

I don’t know, I think the Linux command joke in Scaredy Cats was much geekier then this one.
Dude, they even have Traceroute in Windows. I think they already had Traceroute in Windows before there WAS a Linux. That’s not nearly hipster enough to be geekier than this.
The Linux joke falls into the catagory of “high geek”, since it involves computer knowledge that is only used by programmers and network administrators. The Resident Evil joke can only be considered “low geek”, since video games have a broad base of appeal.
However, in terms of absolute geekyness, Jill is more geeky than traceroute, due to its greater obscurity.
Traceroute is right “up there” with pinging. Which is probably as well-known as (….hmm… I thought this analogy would e easier…) okapis?

You know, it hadn’t crossed my mind till this comic for some reason but, now that we’ve seen them young, have they been aging as the comic has progressed or is it like a lot of shows where they can go on for 10 years and stay the same age?
In real life animals don’t undergo puberty the way humans do, they simply get bigger and reach their adult size within a certain amount of time. I imagine the same applies here, where neither Grape nor Peanut is going to show signs of aging for a while – they ‘grew up’ before the comic started.
I’m going to go out on a limb and say the new drawing style was the aging
And I suppose we might not notice it, as when they met Rufus they were the same height, and he’s supposed to be rather old so it probably wouldn’t be the most visible of changes.
I think they’d already reached their full growth when the strip started.

Anyone can be ’sandwiched’ between two objects, so it’s funny because anyone can be made into a sandwich. Here it’s a reference to a game, so it’s made funnier for anyone that played the game and remembered the line.
I think he means that they likely got married before Resident Evil was released, which is quite possible. On the other hand, RE was more than a decade ago now, so if Peanut is say 5 now, that gave them another 5 years before adopting him to get married. That would mean that the meme was fresh at the time of their marrage…

Previously, Peanut escaped from his collar. When the Sandwiches found him, they put his collar back on.
Peanut slipped out of his collar and ran off, which is how he got into the cat section of the pound in the first place. Once Jill caught up, she put the collar back on and carried Peanut off.
