From The Zebra’s Mouth

  1. Ryufire

    Wow that was unexpected! o.0

    • Tensa Zangetsu

      This just screams
      “This is gonna end badly”

      • Draven

        No it screams, “EEEEEEEEK!”

  2. Zukio

Aw poor Miles… Also I don’t know how effective it is to faint in front of the wolf…

    • rtlstien

She must have mistaken him for a bear…

      • Zukio

She does have blonde/gold hair, she might be Goldie Locks hoping for some nice porridge and that bed.

    • silverfang16

      Not at all in fact.

    • Tuctchone

shes obviously blind because she cant see that miles is wearing a collar

      • mauser

Looks like a dogtag to me, Ironically.

        • Tuctchone

its still a form of identification so technically he isn’t feral

          • Frank

does that mean human children are ferals?

          • darkgloomie

well, from a certain point of view and under a specific age range, yes, yes they are.

        • AflacMan13

I am pretty sure that is a Wild animal tracker tag. Like the ones nature conservation organizations put in animals’ ears once they tranquilize them in the wild. They are used to track animals and migration patterns and such.

At least that is what it looks like to me anyway.

  3. Elwood Blutarsky

    Where’s a zebra get mace?

    • Zukio

There’s the complicated answer, and then there is the internet.

      • Elwood Blutarsky

        And then there’s Karishad.

        • xhunterko

Hat’s off to you sir, beat me to it.

        • Zukio

Mace on the internet for zebra’s $5.
The look on your face when Karishad does something, Priceless.

        • Xane

I fully support this answer. Karishad sneaks out of the zoo so he could be the supplier for all sorts of things the animals want but the zoo employees wouldn’t necessarily give them. Or the kangaroos could have bought it while on vacation.

        • mauser

If it was Karishad, chances are that it’s ‘mace’ more inthe morningstar sort of sense.

      • SomeRandomGeekNamedBrent

there’s also “a wizard did it”

    • xhunterko

      And then there’s Karishad.

    • Robin Bobcat

      Medieval equipment store!

… what? The zoo has its own branch of the SCA. Didn’t you know?

. . . Huh. I would pay serious money to visit that zoo, now I think of it.

      • SomeRandomGeekNamedBrent

I feel there is some confusion as to what the Zebra means by “mace”
Mace is a word used to refer to Pepper Spray, though it is actually a brand name.

        • Aerion Snowpaw

No, I don’t think anyone was confused :P

          • Jesse James

A mace is also a club like weapon from medieval times though (Think of it as a Morning Star; but not on a chain), judging from Robin Bobcat’s post, he got pepper spray mace mixed up with the “bash you over the head with a spiky ball on a stick” mace.

          • Thouhastbinpwnd

Dude, a morningstar dosnt have a chain. That’s a flail, a morningstar is a spiky ball on a stick

          • Thouhastbinpwnd

            A mace is blunt

          • gaboris

I was confused cuz I thought it was this. XD

          • Robin Bobcat

Jesse… If you have to explain the joke… *sigh*

And if I recall correctly, originally ‘mace’-type sprays were a tear-gas variant that they’re no longer allowed to sell to civillians, so they switched to pepper spray as an alternative. You can still get the stuff in some jurisdictions/with proper permit/black market.

As for the ‘morningstar/mace/flail’ debate – A ‘mace’ is any predominantly blunt striking weapon, with or without spikes, knobs or other protrusions, weighted at the head (as opposed to just a club). A ‘flail’ is a mace weapon with a flexible portion (hinge, pivot, or chain) between the handle and the striking head. A ‘morning star’ refers to the ball-with-spikes design, attached to a chain or not.

    • jmillart

And then how does he use it?

      • Frank

        He’s still working on that

      • Alexander

        Sheer force of will?

  4. Valerio

    Poor Miles :(

    • Ryufire

This scene reminds me of Alex from movie Madagascar for some reason :P

      • FlintFang

        Bad Kitty!

  5. The Wolf Kin

Well, now we know how the zoo incident started. Quite interesting, actually. I look forward to how this plays out for Miles and his family.

    • Ryufire

They’ll be airing on Animal Planet’s Top 10 Animal Horrors!

  6. 1boredcanadian

Quick, just say you are an oversized husky, it might work.

    • Zukio

The alt text offers Tamaskan as an alternative, but Husky might be a better known answer.

      • volkoseba

        You beat me :|

        • Zukio

          I’m sorry…
As consolation you did put the whole alt text for the iPhone readers!
And if that’s not enough go to door #2 for more fabulous prizes!!!

          • rallyjr

            i like fabulous prizes

          • Zukio

Determining prizes through the ‘Joey Method’ (rolls percentile), Congratulation!!! You won a set of Grass Dolls, each personalized with the name of the Elf child it was intended for!

          • rallyjr

…. well now i know what to put on the graves

    • volkoseba

Alt text: Oh Miles, you should’ve mentioned you were someone’s oversized tamaskan

    • Xane

Yeah, people who don’t pay attention to such things tend to think wolves are some kind of snow dog or even a big greyish German Shepherd. I swear one of the people in our neighborhood had a wolf or wolf hybrid that he passed off as a husky. She wasn’t all that big but the body structure and fur was definitely not normal husky/malamute fur. She was pure white but not albino, so maybe a samoyed/wolf cross. He was always careful to keep her away from people (i.e. if you were taking a walk he’d turn down the nearest side street). Of course she could have been a samoyed/otherdog cross that just happened to look wolfish.

    • jmillart

      Say Malamute, it works better.

  7. The Wolf Kin

Also: Miles’ face in panels 6 and 8 are priceless.

And the obligatory “Gee, Miles sure is looking buff today!”

    • Dontlookmenaked

      Like always :3

    • valerio

      evene moreso than usual

      • The_Rippy_One

He is having an easy time supporting her, isn’t he?

  8. Wanderer

Wow Miles is really short now

    • Valerio

      but SO buffy, man!

  9. volkoseba

What, the people in the neighborhood just forgot who he was? What was the party for?

    • rallyjr

i think the Zoo gets more people and from further away

    • LoneHowler

I spend a lot of time at my local zoo, I hear many languages while I’m there. Zoos are massive tourist draws, it’s not just for locals

    • Xane

Really it’s only the people in Babylon Gardens who would have any clue that there are feral wolves living in houses and throwing dinner parties. There hasn’t been too much discussed about how big it is but it only looks like it’s a few streets, maybe even just one big street. And they’re very pet/animal friendly there (even moreso than usual!) and people were still a little wary of the wolves. Though I do wonder if “wolves living in a house!” made the news.

  10. rallyjr

wait miles is by himself? and more importantly the 3 pups are out there unsupervised?!

    • Zukio

Oh dear, Miles didn’t say how much trouble they got in did he?
I can see the cubs doing a scene from the Lion King though… Kinda wanna see it now…

    • silverfang16

Could be with Lucretia, which is not much better.

    • Grip the Wolf

Yeah… this is probably nothing compared to what those kids are doing right now…

      • Argent Stonecutter

“Space Laser! You put that fox down right now!”

        • Grip the Wolf

Oh, wait it’s Karishad…. Space Laser, RUN! THAT’S KARISHAD! RUN WHILE YOU STILL CAN! SAVE YOURSELF!

  11. jood580

now what did he say about them fitting in

  12. xhunterko

    No, I am not feral.

    • Dontlookmenaked

I just USED to be feral

      • The_Rippy_One

I’m on a 12 step program and everything.

        • xhunterko

          Wanna see my certificate?

  13. Jesse James

    “Uh-Oh” indeed.

Miles sure has put his foot in it now.

    • Grip the Wolf

      I think you mean “paw”

    • Dontlookmenaked

Now its time to try to find somewhere to wipe it off at….. Of course make sure nobody else steps in it.

  14. silverfang16

Maybe they would buy that he was a human with a fur disorder…with pants of course.

    • Dissension

Also, a muzzle and tail and big canine ears. = P

      • gaboris

And half the size of a normal human and STILL be buff as bodybuilder. :D

        • Hera Ledro

Pfft, the lady has way more meat on her than miles ;D

        • Frank

Are you saying people who suffer dwarfism can’t be weightlifters?

          • gaboris

            WRONG WAY OF SAYING IT!!!
No I didn’t say anything about that, but(as far as I know so I’m maybe making myself sound like an idiot) people with dwarfism don’t have the same proportions like ppl without it so in this case Miles wouldn’t be mistaken as one… but wait a minute… this kinda went in the wrong direction didn’t it? O_o”

          • Frank

          • gaboris

Ummm-ummm… YOU started it! *hides under his desk* O_O

      • silverfang16

        I have seen stranger!

  15. rallyjr

wait… where is “feral” coming from, all Mile said was he is “local” and look he is even wearing a leash and being polite & civil

    • 1boredcanadian

Maybe I’m overthinking this but perhaps it’s the social structure where people judge by appearences.

    • Valerio

      your prejudice at work!

    • Nohbody

While a person can, as Agent Kay notes in the first “Men in Black” movie, be smart, they can also be just as dumb, panicky, and irrational as groups of people.

    • Argent Stonecutter

      • Grip the Wolf

        No. Just RUN!

        • Valerio

          no, CUDDLE!

          • Grip the Wolf

            Love does not compute! *BOOM!*

          • Xane

Sadly, this comic means that if you ever somehow meet Miles in reality, you cannot snuggle him or he will eloquently strongly disapprove of your bad manners! :( Oh well…

          • Frank

So it’s a strange game where the only winning move is not to play

          • valerio

            sweetest kind of wargame

          • xhunterko

            And, you all lost!

  16. IceKitsune

Oh boy this should be fun for sure.

  17. gaboris

Oh for the love of… I should’ve seen this one coming. XP

BTW how did a zebra get a mace? I’m PRETTY sure that should be against the rules of the zoo. :P

OOOhhh the comment rules were added to the commenter. SWEET! :D

  18. Firewolf

LOL Been there! A big misunderstanding, and then later they tie you up and your parents think you went and got killed but find your in jail then are relieved then angry then…nvrmnd :D I lol’d

  19. Robin Bobcat

Aaaaand cue the Yakkity Sax music!

    • Frank

Miles running clumsily while still carrying the woman?

  20. falcon01

Nice work on the fence effect Rick, and once again you have all my co-workers thinking I’m a moron for laughing so darn hard!
    good job!

  21. Ozuan

    …i blame miles

*runs from missiles, nukes, and other such deadly objects*

    • Zukio

      Gives flowers, specifically Autumn crocus…
      Joking! XD

    • Valerio

…Hold still, I had this new antimatter thingie I wanted to test…

    • Grip the Wolf

And I had a frying pan… uh-oh! *runs and hides*

  22. Therolyn

Well, this isn’t going to end well at all XD

    • Grip the Wolf

Meesa has a baaadd feeling about this… *is mistaken for Jar Jar Binks and gets shot at*

  23. Argent Stonecutter

You can tell she’s a bit blonde when she’s talking about how soft Miles’ fur is… but she’s wearing gloves.

    • SomeRandomGeekNamedBrent

what if she has a skin condition that makes her hands brown and leathery?

      • Draven

        • SomeRandomGeekNamedBrent

          It’s real. look it up.

  24. acedog98

She could have at least fainted the other way…..I mean cmon, poor miles

    • Frank

It’s a cartoon faint (inherited from early 20th century theater) 180° turn, then fall backwards in the direction you were formally facing

      • Frank

*formerly. I probably shouldn’t be doing this after skipping lunch

  25. GameCobra

Lucretia would be jealous. Even the human ladies fall for Miles.

  26. Yehoshua

He used to be a feral like us until he took an arr*shot*

    • Draven

      Shot in the knee? *bricked

  27. Tara

Woah Miles, you shrank a bit there buddy.

  28. hirple

Maybe it’s just me, but the lineart seems a bit different…. stronger and a bit more defined, maybe. I like it.

  29. Draven

Last panel zebra looks almost as surprised as Miles does worried

  30. thefirstonethere

    yes… that was a mouthful.

  31. SonicFox

Oh man, there is going to be such chaos; kinda gets under my skin when misunderstandings like this happens, hope it gets worked out!

  32. WingedwolfGirl

*Reads Alt text and googles tamaskan*

    Aww, their adorable! ♥

  33. WolfBrother

yeah, Miles does seem a little short, most wolves from nose to tail are on the verge of six feet. but hey this comic is its own thing and it works perfectly! XD also i think Miles is in for it now, the zoo is bout to crazy O.o

  34. Kormiak

Hmmm……Judging from the height I remember from when he first appeared…>Either Miles has shrunk, or she is really tall and wearing high heels.

    • WolfBrother

agreed, when we first see him, he is almost as tall as Earl. Earl doesn’t look like a small man to me so I’m going to say he is probably about six feet tall, give or take a few inches, but this lady makes him look really short!

    • Z24

Nah, it’s jsut taht he’s been around King so much, we forgot that King’s actually a midget of a dog.

  35. Xane

Oh Miles, you should have just played along from the beginning. It’s not like you can help being so incredibly cute everyone wants to pet you. Just enjoy the ear-rubs! Also it’s bear attacks you’re supposed to play dead for, not wolf attacks! (yesiamawarethisisnotactuallytrue). I totally want a Tamaskan but they cost an arm and a leg.

Shouldn’t she have freaked out regardless if he was a feral or exhibit? The wolves are in a pen, not in the petting zoo! Miles at least has a tame-tag. Also I hope this doesn’t go as far downhill as it looks like it’s going to be… I’ve always felt bad for Miles ever since he was all depressed after finding out most people are still afraid of wolves. He can be so innocent at times.

    • McFly

This just makes me wonder what people are doing to his pups. ;)

      • Valerio

        • Xane

He’s giving Darth Vader Sanchez more bellyrubs than I’m getting!

    • Valerio

      she’s a blond gal.
      nuff said

  36. Grip the Wolf

*Sighs* I’ll get the Benny Hill music…

  37. Grip the Wolf

Also, hooray for the new Gravatar!

  38. Grip the Wolf

    This does not bode well…

  39. My Fate in My Hands

Reminds me of the plane scene in Get Smart. “He’s lighting his shoe! ITS A SHOE BOMB!!!” “What? No it’s gum.” “HE’S GOT A GUN!!”
….so yeah I foresee something of that nature.

  40. icexcap

    Yeah, One word … -_-;
    R-U-N 0_0

  41. Tendo

Am I the only one wondering just how Miles is managing to hold someone that appears to be two to three times his height?

    Please no buff jokes…

    • Dontlookmenaked

Buff is the only explanation my friend :)

    • Xane

Well it’s a cartoon, but also Miles and Daryl are quite strong, it’s already been established that he can easily hold an adult human (Thomas Milton when he tried to escape after breaking into the ferrets’ mansion). That’s probably part of the reason that humans are freaked out by wild wolves. Imagine an animal with Miles’ strength and intelligence that’s aggressive and easily frightened. Somehow I doubt all ferals are nearly as polite and calm as Miles and his pack are.

I do agree with some of the previous posters that Miles looks a bit short today, he seems to be about “normal pet height” rather than “bigger than a pet but shorter than a human” like the wolves usually are.

      • Valerio

Well, it’s true that humans will fear/dislike their peers with different skin color or from different countries, so it fits that even intelligent and polite wolves are regarded with fear

      • FerreTrip

As I just pointed out, we often see wolves at a height taller than pets that isn’t TOO much taller without zooming out (much when it comes to poor King)…Or it may be an artist faux-pas, so who knows?

    • Rick Griffin

Two or three times? You mean like one-and-a-half times?

  42. Misharu

Love the wolves so much. Poor Miles, don’t hurt him! = (

    • Valerio

we already know from the first strip he and his family won’t get it too rough, though it won’t be ‘pleasant’.
For sure, Miles looked enough relaxed when King came back home.

      • Xane

Miles also has a cutely cheerful and innocent personality (really, him getting so annoyed at being treated “like a puppy” is slightly at odds with his normal mood but then again he’s still Feral Inside® – Do Not Pet Happy Fun Wolf), so even if it went pretty badly he probably just shrugged it off as another adventure.

  43. Dontlookmenaked

  44. Kes

Isn’t he also ‘married’? Double uh-oh.

    • Zukio

Miles is cheating on Lucretia!?! That’s even worse than the humans, everyone should fear Lucretia’s wrath!!!

      • Frank

And if she finds out that she missed her soaps for wasting time arguing, run!

        • rallyjr

          …if you get the chance

  45. Frank

Love, love, love the zebra’s expression(s)

  46. FerreTrip

    Oh, dear…O_O;

Wait, I thought that the wolves were as big as humans…? Then again, they’re taller than pets but still in the frame without zooming out or anything, sooo…*shrug*

Makes me think about domesticate-able animals that could actually be as big as humans. Well, okay, the only one coming to mind being Anatolian Shepherds, since I had once once. Those guys are HUGE…(Oh, Great Danes, too.)

    • SomeRandomGeekNamedBrent

I have one currently. they are huge. ^_^

    • Rick Griffin

I’ve always drawn them as at least a head shorter than humans, it’s just this one I did not have a good height check so the woman came out really tall. Also, the Zebra is on slightly elevated terrain.

  47. Z24

“Lucretia, this is… exactly what it looks like…”

  48. FantasticMrWolf

Well, that doesn’t look like it’s going so well O.o

  49. Dontlookmenaked

Miles holding Goldi locks in the last panel kinda reminds me of a vampire. Like how they hold them like that and then bite there neck and drink there blood :P just me I guess.

    • WolfBrother

lolz. that was the first thing i thought too =D

  50. SilverZeo

Urban Wolf Lesson 30: Never correct or stop some human who pets you. It will be an undignified experience… but definitely worth it to skip the police work…. but if you do… bring extra of that “cook” meat that the officers love so much…

  51. Lycanthrope

    Mass = Critical

  52. Lobo09

    Is he in problems?

    • Frank

No, just in a bit of trouble

      • Lobo09

        Ah that is right =)

  53. Yehoshua

I say, we need an avatar made of Pannel six, that we do.

  54. Justice193

as long as he doesn’t say “let me explain” he should be able to explain what heppened, if he starts explaining right away, and very breifly…. something like “She fainted and I caught her, because I didn’t want her to get hurt”… but considering his current demeanor and “uh-oh” statement, I figure he blows the explanation, and then Shenanigans.

  55. Muddypaws

    Quick! Miles… Blame the ZEBRA!

  56. Valerio

Unless Bill is shorter than your average human male, Miles *was* taller
or this gal got REALLY high heels… :?

    • Xane

      King’s shortness is contagious!

    • Frank

He was leaning over, Miles’ yard is slightly higher than the sidewalk, and Miles is closer to us so he appears bigger

  57. McFly

Just to let you know, there is a spelling error in panel 4. It says “it” instead of “it’s”

    • Grip the Wolf

I can’t tell if that’s supposed to be “Olde English” or if it a mistake. See if you can spot the irony in the previous sentence!

      • McFly

Why didn’t I see that before?

    • Rick Griffin

      No, it’s correct as is

      • McFly

Yeah, I see. My bad. ;)

      • Grip the Wolf

You mean…. I was actually RIGHT? YAAAAAAAAAAYY!

        • jood580

yes. yes you wear (know that is spelled wrong but i dont know how it is spelled

  58. GentleCorgy's#7COMBO

You sure know how to sweep a lady off her feet…
even though she is not of the same species.

  59. SilverZeo

That must be a tall woman, wasn’t Miles the same size as Mr. Sandwich when he first appeared?

  60. jood580

    that wolf, that woman.

  61. Dan

People overreact way too much and never think. Honestly, wolves RARELY attack humans and usuely only do so when rabid, desperat from hunger, or in self-defence. Even if I was to confront a wolf in the wild I don’t think I’d be THAT freaked out – realy causios, Yes, I’m not stupid – I’d most likely try to pretent to ignore it and hope it does the same to me – that don’t work play submissive.

Also, for all y’all crushen over Miles, WE GET IT!! HE’S BUFF!!! Start a fan-club already!

And finaly, who “EEK’s” like that and faints right into the arms of the one scaring them, it would almost seem she “other intentions”.

    • Dan

Had, I ment to had between she and “other
