It’s because 5 really would be nice – 4 gives you a pokemon with a specialty without every quite going 1 man army. Which puts an emphasis on a team of 6 and their synergies, as opposed to curb stomping with one over-powered ‘mon.

Weeeeeeell, he’s a fictional character, and “acts of cruelty” have lead to interesting plot/character developments and create conflicts. Consider how Romeo and Juliet would have developed had it been just a straightforward romance without the Bard’s “cruel” addition of the feud between the Montagues and the Capulets.

Well, that does look like a decision point – although King’s having to bring up “a malevolent entity” in the prior strip did make it look more like he was trying to persuade himself that there was some reason to go back to being human than like he really wanted to do so.

New and improved King decided to give it a try for doggy happiness and chose very explicit phrasing, in that sense.

Now imagine if King and Bailey get together and Pete decides to turn him back into a human against his will. It seems like the sort of thing he’d do.
I believe that he couldn’t.
1) That would be against the ‘implicit benevolence’ rule. It would cause unnecessary harm.
2) Transformation is subjected to King’s decision, especially now that he’s officially a third player and not only an avatar.
3) given the first two, IF King decided in a weird quirk of the moment he’d be better off a human, then Pete could transform him in obligation and in respect of the game general rules.
4) I should quit tap water
1) Since when has Pete obeyed the rules? Breaking into heaven to steal King’s fate is only the most recent example…
2) I thought only the immortals were players, and King wasn’t an avatar [because his involvement in the game was involuntary]
3) King had previously decided that he wanted to be human, and Pete’s involuntary transformation of Joel into King was deemed against the rules, but Pete was neither obliged nor interested in transforming him back, nor were the other players
4) Orange soda.
Right now Pete’s wanting to play by the rules or not is probably irrelevant, having been captured and all. He’s kinda out of play while in the celestial equivalent of jail, and even if he wasn’t Great Kitsune’s ruling was pretty explicit that Pete couldn’t go back to the mortal realm without a willing avatar of his own (for which King most certainly does not qualify, for obvious reasons
).
It’s very unwise to tick off a GM, and outright ignoring their rulings is a good way to do just that.

I had a whole long comment typed up for yesterday’s comic on my phone, and then Safari decided to die and take my comment with it. In it I went through a whole slew of different scenarios.
None of them were this. I am the second happiest Corgi alive right now. (King would be the first, obviously!) Everything is going so well for me and everyone I know/care about, even in comics, this week! I’m definitely thankful for Rick hooking these two up, even if it’s temporary.

Actually in one part of the Novel Rick is writing (That part is on the site if you want to read it) Sabrina states that most animals live to be an average of 40 human years.

Well, that does bring up a question; what is it that makes Joel / King not a dog at the moment?
Canine and Human souls seem to be interchangeable in the Housepets setting, or there wouldn’t be any doubt about which heaven he’d be eligible for.
The body is definitely easily changed – at least by creatures like Pete – although we have no data on whether that extends to the genetic level save for Joel / King’s line about how his being short is genetic (and there’s no reason to believe that he really knows what his genes are like at the moment).
It could be something magical – but it’s hard to see what magical element would be more fundamental than the soul.
We could go by “he was raised human” – which would basically be going by memories and attitude. However, the attitude seems to be changing – so if he’s still Human, that means that memories are sufficient. But if that’s true, then hitting Bino over the head until he loses his memory and then raising him as a human would make him human – and that’s kind of awkward.
If it’s “What he was born as”, does being transformed count as rebirth? What if there is reincarnation? Is it fair to impose personal standards on fictional characters created by someone else?
In the context of the Housepets setting… I’d have to agree with Sabrina I think. Given Joel / King’s current circumstances, the decision is up to him.

Well as I’ve understood so far the body has changed down to the genes since as King said a few pages ago his body tells him that he finds Bailey attractive. The soul is a tricky part since FOR ME that is the mix of a persons mind and the normal soul/spirit we talk about.
So I’m more for the “He was born, raised and knows who he is.” version. Take away one half and it’s again a completely different story, but I never said that I don’ believe in change of heart.
I’m only making a fuss aboot this topic so many times cuz my own views dictate as such, not that “I’d like it if this went like this and this.” The story is up to Rick and his world of course, but as he can’t be by us I can’t be restricted by him now can I?

Joel / Kings current genes may not have much to do with his bodies reactions though; most of that’s on the neurological and hormonal levels – and most of the genetic differences between mammals are expressed during the development of those structures and tissues, rather than directly in behavior. “King” bypassed that; since his body was transformed directly.
Personal views are perfectly good reasons for taking positions though! After all, my personal viewpoint is that I like to analyze fictional worlds (and see what ideas they give me to put into RPG’s) – but I certainly can’t expect everyone else to share my hobbies.

I know, but I always thought about this transformation that it has to follow some biological rules and thus if the body is different then the genes themselves have to be different, but I can see your point.
