Like they say, education is your best weapon. Now, I do feel the need to stress the point that just because one has a weapon, does not mean they know how to use it!!!
Kevin, though funny and muscular, does not strike me as smart :b
I will give him this; making game variations only with Tackling is pretty cool!
To be honest, I think the robbers are currently being distracted by the ghost. Remember, he said he does not have his powers, but he still can be really, REALLY scary! Plus, Fido is no longer tied up in the last pane, and appears to be the source of the “HEY”
Like dolphin speech? so every other word was fish instead of fish being every word except for an occasional declaration of war against the land walkers?
lol. I guess Ralph is the REAL misfit of the K-9 squad. None of the others can understand Dolphin language. And here I thought Ralph was the only one among them who was always serious. XD
Babylon Gardens University offers a wide range of courses regarding the history and language of long lost peoples. While you’re taking correspondance courses with them, be sure to check out Art and Literature of Atlantis and Neolithic Cave Scrawlings: A Comparative Survey of Artwork from the Dawn of Language.
Ummm… Okay I guess I should’ve said something more understandable. XD
What I meant that we didn’ have specialized history just an all around one that was about the whole world. Okay Asia and Afrika were cut a bit short and generalized, but YOU try and find historic information on things before writing was used.
So various animals once held high social positions – but this period appears to have passed. Ergo, within relatively recent history, a wide variety of animal types have lost their near-human social status.
Magic was apparently reasonably well known and considered reliable at one point. It could be that magic is still fairly widely accepted in the Housepets universe (judging by an admittedly limited sample of reactions to Pete’s activities, I’d guess at “people have heard of it, but it’s uncommon”. If not, we have another mystery – what happened?
For a variety of reasons I’d guess at something to do with the industrial revolution, but the evidence is extremely scanty.
Possibly something akin to the whole “Mage: the Ascension” thing, specifically the stuff about the Technocracy.
To explain: magic is this all-powerful stuff and mages can do ten impossible things before breakfast… but magic isn’t for everyone, and mages aren’t the majority of the population. Since for every good mage that goes around healing broken bones and growing exceptional crops there probably are five more who go around terrorizing villages in their omnipotency delusions, the world isn’t a nice place.
There come the industrial revolution. People don’t have to rely on magic to do dangerous stuff anymore, and possibly can better fight back against crazies. Slowly, the awareness of magic at large fades, only cultived by small groups of people and/or patron magical deities (ie Spirit Dragon or Pete for example).
… I still can’t rationalize away the need for the Mezoamerican history course, if people don’t consciously know about magic, though. Oh well. So much for trying.
Very nice origin for the ghost, good story-telling! I think that little bit of information about where he came from (and what his culture was like) adds a nice texture to the story.
I like the idea that he foresaw his death and prepared for it, that being a ghost was part of his plan. It’s also a nice clever twist that his culture thought that planning ahead to continue his duty after death was somehow a sign of weakness.
Ya know, it’s been a while since we last saw Peanut and Grape. May I suggest having them hear about this, think of Pridelands, and go crazy begging to join the team on the adventure? Because I would LOVE to see at least one of them for a few strips again. After all, they were supposed to be the main characters of this comic, and then they sort of died off.
Far from ‘dying off,’ Peanut and Grape were featured two arcs ago. Just as King will not be the star of every arc, Peanut and Grape will be used when it makes sense to do so.
Not to undermined the respect and integrity of k-9 Police force,, but I doubt these guys can escort a kid to school together without something take a BIG crash in a wal. They’re last-names might as well as “Howard, FIne, and Howard”.
i think that its really cool that you included the Mesoamerican. i just learned abot them today. the were the first now civilization in America… something like that. keep up the great work Rick.
Yes Kevin you should have lol!
Like they say, education is your best weapon. Now, I do feel the need to stress the point that just because one has a weapon, does not mean they know how to use it!!!
Kevin, though funny and muscular, does not strike me as smart :b
I will give him this; making game variations only with Tackling is pretty cool!
“..had a that course” misprint
They probably should have checked to see if the robbers weren’t looking.
To be honest, I think the robbers are currently being distracted by the ghost. Remember, he said he does not have his powers, but he still can be really, REALLY scary! Plus, Fido is no longer tied up in the last pane, and appears to be the source of the “HEY”
Maybe you’re right about it being Fido that’s talking, but I don’t think the robbers have seen the ghost yet.
“Dealing with ghosts is one thing, but this?”
from what i can tell, the robbers where the poor “first choice of help”
Well the ghost is now explained as is the crazy old mans saying.
So the Shade was actually the Ghost? Or the Ghost is actually a Shade…? Gah, too much thinking… (Grabs frying pan)………ooh, pritty Staarz…
Shade is just another word for spirit.
Hit me…(*stars*) …I meant another spirit.
Or a summoner possessed by evil spirits (Eragon)
So that’s who the ghost is
You can never have enough Mezoamerican History up your sleeves!
And practical telepathy in Nahuatl, too!
I know that I said I wondered what he said, but that was kind of… not awesome…
(Insert Dramatic Gopher Here)
There I said it. *Run away!*
I though he was a prairie dog?
Of course it’s necessary! Honestly. How else are we supposed to put things in context?
Kevin is getting more screen time. Gotta love Kevin.
Like dolphin speech? so every other word was fish instead of fish being every word except for an occasional declaration of war against the land walkers?
Fish Fish Fish Fish Fish Fish Fish Fish Fish Fish
I hope you understood that Mr. Ralph
Fish Fish Fish Fish Fish Fish Fish Fish Fish Fish
Usurp the human oppressors!
Fish Fish Fish Fish Fish Fish Fish Fish Fish Fish
Q: How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?
A: Fish!
lol. I guess Ralph is the REAL misfit of the K-9 squad. None of the others can understand Dolphin language. And here I thought Ralph was the only one among them who was always serious. XD
And suddenly I can’t help but think of Peanut’s Arkadian course by correspondence…

Um….but the Aztecs DIDN’T consider gold to be valuable. Their precious metal of choice was iron.
Yes, I’m a Mexican
I figured there was something like that I was missing.
There, I changed it slightly so it’s ambiguous.
Still says “he sank the spanish ship that carried off the gold.”
Well that’s what the Spanish TOOK now, isn’t it?
Hmmm… so what was changed now?
I think it’s where it says “vault”
I was wondering why there was a cheetah/lepers ghost in the middle of, what im presuming to be, North America.
Jaguar, man.
Tehuantl or Ocelotl?
i’d take either one *pets him* =D
I’d think twice about petting a jaguar wielding an obsidian-edged sword.
*facepalm* it was late when I posted that
Quite an ear ralph has
just his mind’s ear.
Yeah, his ear is very buff in this strip, isn’t it?
WHEN is this going to have an END?
… I hope never. XD
It’s for this reason that it’s called a “running gag”
IE YOU’RE NEVER GONNA CATCH ME AND MAKE ME STOP NANANANA!
http://www.undefined.net/1/0/?strip=42
o how i love puns
Thug 1: HEY!
Thug 2: What?
Thug 1: Those dogs can talk!
Thug 2 : ?????
Oh yeh, they got distracted by the ghost again and forgot to pay attention to the bad guys.
I think talking dogs will be the least of their problems once they discover that the ghost is following them…or at least i THINK it’s following them.
I’m sure they know the ghost is following them, since they’re carrying the artifacts.
nice sucks that he didnt pay attention, then maybe ths spirit would have talked to him… O.O
I wish MY obedience school offered Mezoamerican History!
Meh, our’s only had normal history, but we went over EVERYTHING in that… so I’m almost as lost as others to tell the truth. XD
Normal history? What kind of history is abnormal?
The kind of History that is made in Housepets! Just like the last Easter Egg Hunt!
http://www.housepetscomic.com/2009/04/13/any-year-with-no-fatalities-is-a-good-year/
Ummm… Okay I guess I should’ve said something more understandable. XD

Hieroglyphics!!!
Ah, more information!

“Everyone can be Super! And when everyone’s super *chuckles* no one will be.”
nice one Frank!
*holds popcorn with a large smile* This movie is awesome!
lol it would be awesome! Too bad it’s not actually a movie.
Dude, I would buy out the theaters, yesh, all of dem.
EXPOSITION dump! I don’ know why ppl don’ like them, I like hearing stuff like this.
exposition dump? what’s exposition dump?
Exposition: Writing or speech primarily intended to convey information or to explain; a detailed statement or explanation; explanatory treatise.
Dump: LOTS of it.
Well what do you know! The guy who said it was Teoxihuitl was right! 8D
Translating the speech of an Aztec jaguar-warrior ghost?
You can learn a lot in school!
i you looked back at my comments, I KNEW THIS WOULD HAPPEN!!!
This just took a turn for the interesting.
So, looks like the ghost really was really tiny. Cue Spo vs. ghost!
Oh that would be one interesting battle, but i think the ghost would win in the end because…he’s a ghost X3
Wow, what do they teach them on obedience these days?
You mean what DON’T they teach?
I agree with darkgloomie. The real question? What do they mean when they say “obedience” these days? XD
You should always question you’re sanity when mezo-american ghosts start talking to you.
You are sanity?
Rule 4:
Don’t correct others’ grammar or spelling unless they specifically request it; this is annoying and downright rude.

Rck: are you going to go back and change ??? to Teoxihuitl in the previous tags?
Eventually
HEEEEEEY SO RICK DECIDES TO JOIN THE PARTY, EH!? I had never noticed he would actually reply to comments. I must be pretty blind to not see that.
Oh eyah, rick, what is that in your avatar?
You’re referring to Ponbon, a member of the Danroo species, created for another of Rick’s projects. [link]
Oh wow! I always wondered what that was. It’s so cute ^^
So is this guy related to the LARPers? Dragon, Kitsune, Pete, etc.?
Nope I don’t see how he could be seeing as hes a ghost and they are Cosmic Beings. They are two completely different things.
I must agree with Ice-Cosmic Being! XD
Teoxihuitl means either turquoise or divine, apparently.
that explains the color! XD
true, this is not fun for the audience.. but it is interesting indeed, I wonder what will happen next ? :3

i still want a mewmew ghost :3 it’s like a mewmew you can pet forever! =D
what’s a mewmew? a cat?
History lessons about my ancestry from my uncle would have been way more interesting if he had mentioned my culture derived from anthro jaguars
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaguars_in_Mesoamerican_cultures
Yes, there is a Wikipedia page on anthropomorphic jaguars in pre-columbian central America. I love the Internet.
So i might be part jaguar?
I like where this story is going, it should make for an interesting poem.
Whoa, Montezuma’s undead revenge… brutal.
It didn’t mention ruling the world, did it?
Wait a second, that’s not a face, that’s a mask!
*motions to pull the mask off but my fingers go through the face*
… Ok, it’s a face. Run.
lol what does history have to do with obedience? XD
Kevin looks so sad XDD I wanna give him a hug :3
ya know, now that I thinnk about it, he really DOES look sad.
Ya know, it’s been a while since we last saw Peanut and Grape. May I suggest having them hear about this, think of Pridelands, and go crazy begging to join the team on the adventure? Please respond to this Rick.
Far from ‘dying off,’ Peanut and Grape were featured two arcs ago. Just as King will not be the star of every arc, Peanut and Grape will be used when it makes sense to do so.
Ya. I want Grape!
Go to your local supermarket and search in the fruit department
Nobody else but Frank!
In the last panel, is it fido talking, or is it the crooks?
Not to undermined the respect and integrity of k-9 Police force,, but I doubt these guys can escort a kid to school together without something take a BIG crash in a wal. They’re last-names might as well as “Howard, FIne, and Howard”.
What is Ralphs theme tag supposed to be?
Is it just me, or does Ralph look kinda girlish in the last panel?
i think that its really cool that you included the Mesoamerican. i just learned abot them today. the were the first now civilization in America… something like that. keep up the great work Rick.
