If anyone thought this was where we headed with this storyline last week I’d be very surprised. This has been one of the best uses I’ve ever seen of a bait-and-switch story. “It’s an ensemble piece about the cast facing a blizzard…BUT WAIT Sabrina is filling Peanut in on the Spirit Dragon plot.”
And I have to admit I’ve seen so much lampshade hanging and fourth wall leaning overa;; in a strip where they don’t break the fourth wall than I have in this one. I like it, it’s funny.

I think it’s silly for the same reason that they had to filter for the word ‘first’ – yeah, it’s helpful, but people end up jockeying to be the one to put it up first and instead of being helpful it turns into a contest and becomes very annoying.
Not to mention all the aggravating comments it generates about who was, in fact, the first to do so
Is there any way to make it so that the alt text appears elsewhere? I suppose as a last resort you could have the first post always be the alt text, but yeeesh….

1) When you watch a tv program or a stage play there are normally only three walls visible, with the camera or audience making up the ‘fourth wall’. Despite being filmed/watched, actors normally need to pretend that they don’t notice the fact that they have an audience. “Breaking the fourth wall” means the actors directly address the audience in some way.
Similarly, a “lampshade” is drawing attention to something that would normally break the suspension of disbelief needed for a good play/movie/whatever. In this case, Rick is using Peanut to draw attention to the fact that they live in a world of “slice-of-life-slash-romance-comedies about animals” and that the “fantasy multiverse nonsense” is silly. In other words you, as a reader, would likely question why there’s suddenly a mystical elevator leading to another dimension, and in fact could possibly feel alienated from the comic by it. To avoid this, Rick is pointing it out, hense “putting a lampshade on it”.

I still don’t see how it matters, though – the comic is always regularly up on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, unlike some web comics that don’t bother with a time schedule or state one and then ignore it.
Well what I think happens is that the page cache gets stuck with some people, so if it’s around the usual scheduled time they’d need to do ctrl-refresh to clear the cache for the page
im not tech savy, so i didnt know what was up. I just like being able to get in a few comments before falling asleep. otherwise i have to read a flood of comments when i get to check it at 7:00 am
that’s why I lie awake in my bed until it updates and read it on my iPod touch every Monday. Wednesday and Friday, I just check it when I wake up at 5:30.

if that is still confusing, imagine a closed room. there is a wall behind you and one to either side. but wait. there isn’t one in front of you, instead, there are a bunch of people looking at you. They don’t think you know they’re there, so if you address them, you have broken the illusion of a closed room. there are only the three walls you can see, now.

i don’t think i’ve mentioned this before, but Rick’s facial expressions are AMAZING. In every panel i can tell exactly what the characters are saying. i think it’s mostly the placement of eyes.
I can tell what they’re saying because of the talk bubbles.

Reynard the Fox in French literature is male, as is the hero of the song where “he grabbed the gray goose by the neck” and “he didn’t mind the quack quack quack and the legs all dangling down-oh”. Br’er Fox is definitely a guy, as is the fox in Pinnochio.

To Brent: I’m currently playing a group with three girls and two guys…. not as rare as you’d think in these days.

Tails is a two-tailed fox, Shippo is a baby Kitsune (ie fox demon), though I can’t argue about the gender of the Nine-tailed fox, as it being the personification of hatred doesn’t have a gender.

That doesn’t break the wall… that’s just pop culture references for imagination purposes… Breaking the Fourth Wall means acknowledging you are a character in a fiction piece. Such as Peanut has done above through the classic ironical statement. Really they both should have looked at the ‘camera’ for a brief pause before continuing to complete the breaking, but Rick probably ran out of space.
They’re showing the “explosion” to the audience behind the wall.
I see the wall as being a two way mirror. we can see them, but they can’t see us. occasionally, they just turn out the lights and they can see us. they didn’t break the wall with the explosion sign, they just showed us something through it.

She’s Tarot’s apprentice (or equivalent).
Tarot may be the dragon’s avatar, but her powers MAY have been hers before then. Not sure if she IS the Spirit Dragon, or just the one said dragon chose to inhabit for the epic interdimensional game. If the dragon and Tarot can be considered two people, that means Tarot liking Peanut is rubbing off.
