He's also suggesting that saying "he'd been to long too not to know" is better than "he'd been to long than to know"

Very good. But as an editor, I can't let this slide:

We had water, of course, my dad had spent too long in the desert than to know to travel with less than a weeks’ worth, and he usually traveled with at least two months’.

Try this:

We had water, of course; my dad had spent too long in the desert not to know to travel with less than a week’s worth, and he usually traveled with at least two months’.

I liked that! Excellent. If this is the least crazy of these kinds of sections, I look forward to the other ones! I didn't even know who was talking until partway though... Even if that's not how it turns out for the actual book (since you'll probably already know who the narrator is, right?) it was still a nice surprise to read through.
