The joke is rather ambiguous, Rick:
1) Max’s reaction because of going through hell itself is a bit “late” (from trying to process what just happened), therefor making the woodland critters think they’re actually scaring him.
2) Max is actually scared because of the woodland critters.
Over-analyzing FTW
3) There’s something behind them they haven’t noticed yet.
4) There are invisible strings controlling the squirrel and the raccoon and only Max, with the vision of hell, can see them.
5) Spookmeister just grabbed his tail, offstage.
6) Max has seen the future…
Whether or not its delayed reaction or he’s actually afraid of them,
His eye shifted between panel 2 and 3 …so normal motor responses r still good.

Well it would seem that the fun/ violent after effects of mental scaring (couppled with the loss of one of his nine lives) are beginning to reak havoc on max’s mind.
