But yes, it makes no sense. The pets in this world are at least as intelligent as most pre-teen or early-teen children, and quite a few are as intelligent as any human adult. This is, at minimum, no different from cramming your child into a little cage for a night because you want to go out and can't find a baby-sitter. Only for pets, you can't get into legal trouble for it, apparently...
