Haha, you gotta avoid overwhelming the newbies too early, dude! Start them off with a simple premade character, and work up from there!
I actually like how 4th edition D&D has helped make the game easier to get into, and my group’s enjoying it (playing a summoner druid now). On the other hand, we probably still look like Joey here to the two new-ish people.
I don’t have any idea what Joey is talking about. ^.^
I don’t play D&D. (yes I know, I suck because I don’t play it) I really don’t play any games unless I can blow up/burn everything using fireworks, air freshener, a lighter, and a WHOLE BUNCH of petroleum jelly and jet fuel!
Read Sandra and Woo. There’s a russian pyromaniac in the cast. (Any similarities between her and the Disaster Girl meme are purely coincidential. No, seriously.)
Oh silly people and your games.. see we the people of Pathfinders have taken 3.5 and elevate it to the next level.. but those commoners that don’t understand our ways.. we scoff… and roll a 20 sider die to make sure we scoff successfully. ^_^
Someone needs to get that dog Pathfinder or, better yet, World Tree. Or Shard. Shard is also cool. Shard and World Tree also involve anthropomorphic animals.
Welcome! I’m not sure how available World Tree books are anymore, but it was a pretty neat system. It is *very* different than D&D, though, since it is mostly skill-based rather than class-based. Info on Shard can be found on it’s homepage, which I linked below for Silver Guardian.
Love d&d… hate complex rules… Being a dm with multiple players that have photographic memory makes it a lot easier… tons of me saying “roll what you need to” and them saying “well this, this and this, or possibly this,” often resulting in “well, that rule is stupid. roll once, add the crap that makes sense, and let’s get on with the game.”
Being one of the only actual role players in a group of power gamers can get annoying. Being a roleplaying cleric in a large group of OP McGee’s is a riot. “Sorry, my character didn’t know the jerk that keeps making fun of his lack of combat skills was critically wounded. Maybe he should have said something.”
So, you hate complex rules Feather T_C, but what about complex languange given the setting in a blue folder? Nothing beats a blue folder, especially when it needs another folder to describe it! A setting like that surely deserves complex language rules! … wait, what’s the setting again?
ha ha! Thats exactly what happens when my brother asks me to play D&D with him. I love it, but I’m not willing to spend five hours pouring over that kind of stuff.
King needs to run in to an old girlfriend so he can bark at her with out her knowing it’s really him! Or since he was one of those peta guys he should probably run in to his long lost blow up doll! LOL
Ugh, Pathfinder. It’s not 3.75, it’s “hey let’s just ramp up the power level on the old classes”. Now the reason I play 3.5 is missing from Pathfinder (the awesome character customization, where you can make ANY character by combining the hundreds of available classes) unless I’m willing to run a super-gimped character that can’t hold up to the other characters in combat, because all the classes from the splatbooks don’t hold a candle to the Pathfinder core classes. Wu Jen, Swashbuckler, Favored Soul… *poof* all useless.
yeah but it also stops from horribly breaking a character too. I know and loved making 3.5 characters and it was way to easy to make a bunch of ultra powerful characters.
Well, then it just falls to the DM to rebalance the game, either by stepping in and asking the player to avoid taking exploits, or to increase the difficulty of encounters accordingly.
Even if you’ve got godlike stats, the fun can be preserved by accorded adjustments to the narrative.
Increasing the difficulty of the encounters to match an exploiting powergamer’s hundreds of damage or no-save win spells often requires breaking the setting, and leaves any partymembers who aren’t exploiting as useless lackeys.
Dungeons and Dragons again? For some reason, I’m not surprised…
…Oh! And I noticed that Joel/King’s more enthusiastic here even though he might not play an important role in this arc. I’m curious about whether or not he still remembers his true identity…
King smiled after his original transformation (December 2nd, 2009 “I will come to a greater understanding of Peace, Love and Solar Power, or some other new agey junk”)
We have him smiling again after Fox invites him to the Christmas party (December 18th); at the thought of, yes, being turned back into a human (December 25th); and finally, when saying,
“Is at least one section of Bino’s body currently inoperative? Then I’m good” (December 28th)
hold on

now you can see the sarcasm dripping off that
i’m still surprised how the most social game, D&D is nerdy and yet the “cool kids” play WoW, Halo, and Runescape which locks then in a room all by themselves for hours on end. Beleive it or not i play D&D have a hot girlfriend and great friends that will watch my back as opposed to stab itgiven the chance. Pardon mah rant ^.^
Hey, I love Halo! (mostly because the only M-Rated games I can play are ones where you’re shooting aliens, not people, and the aliens don’t look too realistic – like in Gears of War.)
And since when are the “cool kids” the ones who play Runescape? That’s the nerdiest game of all!
I don’t know why people play WoW – it’s pretty much an endless amount of wandering around, doing variations of the same quests and collecting variations of the same items to unlock variations of the same spells.
Now I’m going to get lots of ‘hate comments’, aren’t I?
The only reason I think D&D is “nerdy” is because I can’t be bothered to learn all those rules
Things like Halo and World of Warcraft are new and topical, so it’s easier for them to be accepted by the general public. D&D is old, so it’s much harder to shake its stigma worn in from all these years.
Eek! How’d a young dog channel Old-School D&D so well? I bet if he knew about it, he’d implement THAC0…
That said: Anyone in the Dallas, TX area looking for a game? We’re on D20 Modern, Urban Arcana Setting, and we’re losing a player in a few weeks. (He’s going back to school. Again.) so I pretty much understand where he’s coming from…
Do we get to play as Anthropomorphc Animals?
;p!
King is back wOOt!!!
I never could understand D&D
My god Majin that was quick…..
lol King playing D&D XD
I know i just can’t help it lol!!
I agree with Joey 4th edition sucked.
I know your pain, Joey… I know your pain…
absolute awesomeness! Poor Joey . . . it’s hard to be a gamer.
KING IS THE MAN
THE DOG. MAN. DOG MAN.
Isn’t King a Corgi? Wouldn’t be Corgi Man vice versa?
Actually it’s very posible.
See.
http://www.greatdogsite.com/breeds/details/Pembroke_Welsh_Corgi/
MANDOG
Joey! =3
Samurai vampires… like Shiba-Inu’s with rabies?
Rule of thumb Joey: Take it slow sometimes =3
I hope these two get along again in the future. feels like a childhood moment there.
See, this is why you don’t want to use too many sourcebooks.
I used to play with a COLLIE too.

…
…Am I a pyromaniac?
Is your cat black?
Close, she’s a Calico.
then no, you’re not a pyromaniac
I really hope that was supposed to be a joke
On second thought maybe… I don’t know… It’s hard to tell…
http://www.catsarewonderful.com/sites/hollarmj/_files/Image//Calico%20cat6.jpg
This one’s striped, mine’s spotted.
Depending on the setting and/or strictness of the DM, technically YOUR CHARACTER can do those things in D&D… I’m not sure if that counts.
No, I mean actually burning/blowing up stuff.
Read Sandra and Woo. There’s a russian pyromaniac in the cast. (Any similarities between her and the Disaster Girl meme are purely coincidential. No, seriously.)
The pyromaniac is RUSSIAN? This book interests me already…
It’s a webcomic. The Project Wonderful ads here sometimes show it up
This is why I stick with card games and video games. Old Maid anyone?
Conform to a rule set! Or run the risk of people thinking your the next Byron Hall.
I’d have left when Joey mentioned powergamers, too.
Ditto.
Likewise.
Ha! and I am about to go play a game of…savage worlds…I’ve not played it before I hope it is fun. But when I first started playing I felt like King
You felt you had played it with a collie?
Oh silly people and your games.. see we the people of Pathfinders have taken 3.5 and elevate it to the next level.. but those commoners that don’t understand our ways.. we scoff… and roll a 20 sider die to make sure we scoff successfully. ^_^
I have no idea what half of that meant, and I’ve played and DM’d D&D before. Joey and his friends are weird.
You know what’s wierder? I have never actually played D&D, yet I knew what half of that meant!
This tops it…I know someone just like Bino….in every way except the fur and ears
You mean Joey here or Bino in another strip?
Wheres he pulling all those books from?
I wish I knew someone that played D&D; I’d LOVE to join a session.
I want to say that I miss playing D&D, but I really don’t.
I love how far collars have come in terms of detail since earlier comics. Just sayin’.
lol, some people take D&D too far… Powergaming is no fun either… I prefer Scion right now anyway: you can use cars as clubs against giant insects.
King is even more adorable than usual! And I love the title of the strip.
*hugs King* he makes you do that. It’s the griffin magic!
Oh for the love of GOD, man, just play Pathfinder.
Also, please please PLEASE go somewhere with the D&D game. D8
Heh, at least he didn’t try Oriental D&D with the honor system.
XD
Why does this strip reminds me of this lol
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/game-dogs/1396-Pilot-Episode-D-D-Kills
I loled.
Go Sacred 2, Joey!
(For a moment, I thought it was actually Bino who was asking King to join a game)
also, king NEVER stops being so darn ADORABLE!!! ^_^
Seriously indeed! ^.^
when you have to quote sub sub paragraphs of sub paragraphs of what ever volume of whatever version….the games way too bloated
Oh, yay, we get to see King again. ^w^
Lol, kinda makes me wonder what my friends are gonna tell me. I told them I’d let them teach me how to play D&D.
It is somehow worrisome that Joey goes around with a pile of handbooks. Well, worst case it’s good exercise
Someone needs to get that dog Pathfinder or, better yet, World Tree. Or Shard. Shard is also cool. Shard and World Tree also involve anthropomorphic animals.
cool! thanks for the heads up
Welcome!
I’m not sure how available World Tree books are anymore, but it was a pretty neat system. It is *very* different than D&D, though, since it is mostly skill-based rather than class-based. Info on Shard can be found on it’s homepage, which I linked below for Silver Guardian.
What is Shard and where can I find it?
The homepage for Shard is here: http://www.shardrpg.com/ from there you’ll find links telling you more about it.
Poor Joey, he never wags his tail for a long time.

I used to DM. I never actually read any of the books. Fortunately, the players loved it because we didn’t have to rule lawyer everything.
Poor Joey……
King has reappeared !
All right more King!
Joey has reached nerd level five…
No, no, no! It’s level 7! (Panel 3, sub-bubble 3). Weren’t you paying attention?
the expression on your avatar is perfect for that comment
I’ve always wanted to play D&D, never have. But thanks to Joey I think I’ll just stick to computer RPGs.
woh lots of expanation
ha ha! Thats exactly what happens when my brother asks me to play D&D with him. I love it, but I’m not willing to spend five hours pouring over that kind of stuff.
Bah.
bah?
My family is a bunch of nerds pen and paper aka table top minitures games rule
Jezz one thing hearing someone tell you about D&D and get confused by it. But trying to read what Joey is saying and im still getting lost. @_@
King needs to run in to an old girlfriend so he can bark at her with out her knowing it’s really him! Or since he was one of those peta guys he should probably run in to his long lost blow up doll! LOL
wow king is back and like d&d lol
awww I would play with you
me too!
And there are advantages in being a neutral barbarian: just roll a dice & slaugher your enemies
But if you’re “neutral”, you don’t have any enemies! Or do you mean “chaotic neutral”?
chaotic neutral, yup that’s right.
Like King, I’d walk away from that too.
Joey just needs to look into the Pathfinder RPG, Its basically 3.75 rules.
Just lay the hammer down.
I wonder how many of Joey’s friends actually play with him…
At least two. See June 19th, 2009
Dungeons and Dragons again? For some reason, I’m not surprised…
…Oh! And I noticed that Joel/King’s more enthusiastic here even though he might not play an important role in this arc. I’m curious about whether or not he still remembers his true identity…
It’s a little apparent that he does, hence the Freudian slip about playing D&D in college.
I mean, I doubt many pets go to education higher than obedience school…
I think there’s a slightly more obvious Freudian slip here.
“In collie”.
Think about it.
Ah… “obvious” was not the word I intended to use there. But I can’t seem to think what was.
Freudian slip: when you say one thing while thinking about a mother
When you say one thing but mean your mother.
I want to get a pair of Freudian slippers… that way I can really put my foot in it.
King with improved ears! *noms doggie ears*
Awww. Poor Joey. But I guess that’s what happens when you change the rules so that your friends actually want to fail their will-saving throws!
On second thought, that may be just what makes them as creepy
Do chickens think rubber humans are funny?
random, but yes
my gravatar changed! finally!
What comic is your gravatar from again???
jack. really awesome, but graphic
I took a look at the comic! It looks great! Can’t wait to read all the archives!
another converted
mwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
*coughcoughchoke*
hahahahahahahahahahaha
I’m now a minion of Jack!
Bwahahahahahaha! AHA AHA AHAAAAAAAAAAAAA*inhales*AAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!
This is so my friend Sean. >.<
King looks….off for some reason….
first time he’s smiled
Darn! I mean oneth time he’s smiled
He smiled when he thought he was gonna get changed back to human.
yeah, but this is a less exited smile from a different angle. also, where are his white eyebrows in panel 1?
King smiled after his original transformation (December 2nd, 2009 “I will come to a greater understanding of Peace, Love and Solar Power, or some other new agey junk”)
We have him smiling again after Fox invites him to the Christmas party (December 18th); at the thought of, yes, being turned back into a human (December 25th); and finally, when saying,
“Is at least one section of Bino’s body currently inoperative? Then I’m good” (December 28th)
oh.
well, i think this is the dopiest smile yet
No argument there!
D&D=nerdy
i am prepared for whatever nasty replies I will receive
Yeh, RuneQuest! is way better!
was that a joke?
Can’t you tell?

Things like Halo and World of Warcraft are new and topical, so it’s easier for them to be accepted by the general public. D&D is old, so it’s much harder to shake its stigma worn in from all these years.
Where are the white things above King’s eyes in the first panel?
Also, I feel kind of sorry for myself that I understand what Joey’s talking about.
Is it just me or has he NEVER drawn King’s tail? Or does he not have one? O_o
he would have a corgi’s tail
The closest we get is when Fox gives him a hug (everybody! “awww!”) on December 28, 2009
*Nods head as Joey explains*
Yea,
Sure,
Right,
Okay.
…I wanna know more about the Samurai vampires.
This is unrelated to Housepets, but…
Spirit Studios 2010,
if U read this, check “Notes” on Ur DEV-ART page.
Awesome. Though I must inform you that I hardly ever use my DEV-ART anymore. I mostly use FA.
Check ur notes 2
Glad U like!
Yes, I know U don’t use Dev-art to often;
would there be a better way to contact U?
If you start an FA account I have two, one for myself and the one you can get to by clicking on my name.
Otherwise it’s probably just best to get a hold of me via Housepets like you have been.
Kay.
Might look into that (the FA account).
Never played D&D, never will. Looks too complicated.
its simple after you finish your character sheet actually>.> its mostly acting and being smart about your situation
i want to lern how to play it but idk were to go to learn it=/
Simpler, maybe, but not simple. : P
Unisystem is simple. D&D, however much I enjoy it, is not ever what I would call simple.
… Except 4.0, which I really don’t mind, but have no real interest in either.
Peanut needs to share the wisdom of console gaming with Joey.
Just so long as neither of them get sucked into a mumorpagur.
I hate to do this, but I must harass you.
what could you not unsee!
ha, i grok…my SO just joined our D&D game as a shaman and the dude’s never played D&D before in any capacity. it’s only slightly overwhelming.
Again.) If you don’t like D20 Modern, we’re flexible, and looking at the latest edition of Star Wars RPG, as well as3.5 standard…
Sorry, I’ll shut up now.
*3rd panel* woah…just WOAH O_O
That is an overwhelming amount of information. If Joey asked me to play, I think I’d get lost at the version numbers. I’d be asking him what the differences between versions is, what the different classes are in the different versions, etc. I think he’d run away from me, not me away from him.
lqtm
I’ll play with you!
I am actually getting ready to run my own 3.5 game,
so I pretty much understand where he’s coming from…
Do we get to play as Anthropomorphc Animals?
;p!
Random fact of the strip:
D&D has been banned in prison.
Kill the spammer! Burn it with fire!
Er… what spammer?
Oh good, someone killed it.
AWWW…. poor Joey…. I’ll play with you even though you talk WAY to much about the rules and other stuff T^T
Powergaming munchkins, driving GM’s to drastict and over complicated rule changes since Version 1.0
Never played D&D, but I would be interested to try. I’ve been called worse things than “nerd.”
Joey overdid it a tiny bit, eh?
