Haha, you gotta avoid overwhelming the newbies too early, dude! Start them off with a simple premade character, and work up from there!
I actually like how 4th edition D&D has helped make the game easier to get into, and my group’s enjoying it (playing a summoner druid now). On the other hand, we probably still look like Joey here to the two new-ish people.

Depending on the setting and/or strictness of the DM, technically YOUR CHARACTER can do those things in D&D… I’m not sure if that counts.

I’m not sure how available World Tree books are anymore, but it was a pretty neat system. It is *very* different than D&D, though, since it is mostly skill-based rather than class-based. Info on Shard can be found on it’s homepage, which I linked below for Silver Guardian.

Love d&d… hate complex rules… Being a dm with multiple players that have photographic memory makes it a lot easier… tons of me saying “roll what you need to” and them saying “well this, this and this, or possibly this,” often resulting in “well, that rule is stupid. roll once, add the crap that makes sense, and let’s get on with the game.”
Being one of the only actual role players in a group of power gamers can get annoying. Being a roleplaying cleric in a large group of OP McGee’s is a riot. “Sorry, my character didn’t know the jerk that keeps making fun of his lack of combat skills was critically wounded. Maybe he should have said something.”
So, you hate complex rules Feather T_C, but what about complex languange given the setting in a blue folder? Nothing beats a blue folder, especially when it needs another folder to describe it! A setting like that surely deserves complex language rules! … wait, what’s the setting again?
I used to DM. I never actually read any of the books. Fortunately, the players loved it because we didn’t have to rule lawyer everything.

Joey just needs to look into the Pathfinder RPG, Its basically 3.75 rules.
Ugh, Pathfinder. It’s not 3.75, it’s “hey let’s just ramp up the power level on the old classes”. Now the reason I play 3.5 is missing from Pathfinder (the awesome character customization, where you can make ANY character by combining the hundreds of available classes) unless I’m willing to run a super-gimped character that can’t hold up to the other characters in combat, because all the classes from the splatbooks don’t hold a candle to the Pathfinder core classes. Wu Jen, Swashbuckler, Favored Soul… *poof* all useless.
yeah but it also stops from horribly breaking a character too. I know and loved making 3.5 characters and it was way to easy to make a bunch of ultra powerful characters.
Well, then it just falls to the DM to rebalance the game, either by stepping in and asking the player to avoid taking exploits, or to increase the difficulty of encounters accordingly.
Even if you’ve got godlike stats, the fun can be preserved by accorded adjustments to the narrative.
Increasing the difficulty of the encounters to match an exploiting powergamer’s hundreds of damage or no-save win spells often requires breaking the setting, and leaves any partymembers who aren’t exploiting as useless lackeys.
Just lay the hammer down.

i’m still surprised how the most social game, D&D is nerdy and yet the “cool kids” play WoW, Halo, and Runescape which locks then in a room all by themselves for hours on end. Beleive it or not i play D&D have a hot girlfriend and great friends that will watch my back as opposed to stab itgiven the chance. Pardon mah rant ^.^
Hey, I love Halo! (mostly because the only M-Rated games I can play are ones where you’re shooting aliens, not people, and the aliens don’t look too realistic – like in Gears of War.)
And since when are the “cool kids” the ones who play Runescape? That’s the nerdiest game of all!
I don’t know why people play WoW – it’s pretty much an endless amount of wandering around, doing variations of the same quests and collecting variations of the same items to unlock variations of the same spells.

Things like Halo and World of Warcraft are new and topical, so it’s easier for them to be accepted by the general public. D&D is old, so it’s much harder to shake its stigma worn in from all these years.

That is an overwhelming amount of information. If Joey asked me to play, I think I’d get lost at the version numbers. I’d be asking him what the differences between versions is, what the different classes are in the different versions, etc. I think he’d run away from me, not me away from him.
