Its just like shopping at Costco!
It’s like the difference between a can of Coke and SoBe No Fear, kinda. = P
A can of coke and a what-now?
I wouldn’t think there would be any question whether or not to get cheap food for your sapient pets.
Remember, most of the Housepets crew are by and large kids. Kids don’t care if it’s cheap if it has enough marketing behind it and can sate what they deem good, thus having enough sugar.
Ha! This brings back all the memories of failed attempts to make my parents buy me the higher quality, more expensive stuff! I love to Rick!
Gah!!!!! I MEANT: “I LOVE IT RICK”! TYYYYPPPOOOSS!
I love to you too!
hug in groups!
Hugs! can I have one?!
Heh. Reminds me of the opening words of the first official speech of The President of the United States:
Audience member: “I love you, Barack!”
The President: “I love you back!”
(Please, no coments on politics)
[this is not a comment on politics]
When did he say that?
Heh. Reminds me of the opening words of the official speech The President of the United States gave shortly after taking office:
(hail to the cheif finishes playing)
Audience member: “I love you, Barack!”
The President: “I love you back.”
Looks like I’m not the only person who failing. You double posted! Haha!
Naw, it’s slightly different.
No, it’s only slightly different.
Looks like I’m not the only person who IS failing
… I just LOVE karma…
Yes and no. I posted, but the browser didn’t save the cookie, so I was unable to see that my post was awaiting moderation. I therefore re-wrote the post, thinking submission had failed. The following day, the truth manifests itself as a double post!
EMBARISING typos! XD
and an embarrassing typo at that! xD
Kinda suprised they are not aming for Atlantic Salmon and Filet Minon
Most minions are kinda chewy, especially when they leave the trenchcoat on. You might want to try a freshly roasted sidekick, or maybe redshirt surprise.
This is why you filet your minions first.
It’s “Filet Mignon”
And that would be a bit expensive even for a humans diet. Delicious, but very expensive. =P
BTW: the etymology of “minion” is amusing.
Darn you! overshadowing my link with your superior link!
It’s only fair, you made me LOSE THE GAME.
You do know you’re supposed to say “touché” when it’s you that’s made the poigiant comment?
(get a mac… or some fencing lessons)
it was a purposeful fail, as to make fun of how people often use it incorrectly
What do you mean? That was a perfectly normal use of “touché”.
I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if the way we “normally” use it is just an Americanized misunderstanding. Just like Obama and “Si! Se puede!”
I’m sure you’re perfectly cromulent.
DOH Aiming lol
“Shut up and eat your sawdust, kids.”
Can’t complain with stats! XD
“Brand X” vs “Feral Mix” don’t both sound kind of ominous.
you’d be surpised at that ‘feral mix’ … look up ‘evo’ (yes its real) and look at its ingredients compared to the ‘feral mix’ (no i dont work for any pet food company… i just like to spoil my pets)
One of these days, we’re gunna visit, and Rick’s gunna have a FLASH of the housepets team doing a version of “never gunna give you up” just so he can claim you’ve all be rick-rolled..
ANYWAY! I love it. I’m sick of hte value-time stuff my parents buy… So When I got a job, I started getting alot of my own food. The quality stuff.
Or you can buy the same stuff and use the savings to buy awesome things that are cool.
At least part of the time. Depending on the product, some off-brands are worse than the name brands, and others are almost exactly the same. A very rare off-brand will actually be better. One of my favorite root beers is an off-brand.
More and more, like with Wal-mart and Target, the store or value brand is made right along side the name brand. It’s in the agreements when a store agrees to carry a brand, in return for the producer of the product paying less money or getting a sweetheart shelf deal, they will make say..Walmart’s “Great Value” brand of soup, trash bags or such. The pay off for Wal-mart and Target is that all the profit for house brands goes to them.
So don’t discount store brands. Only someone who really knows what they are doing, or someone who works at the various food producers can tell the two apart. If you have the mindset of “Name brand only” then you’ll pay a lot more money for most of the time which will be the same product the store brand is.
Well, while I agree with you that it’s the same product, there’s still the matter of it not always being the same quality.
Maybe it’s just a sign that I’ve been drinking too much soda, but I’ll cite the Safeway house sodas as an example: I’ve noticed lately that they seem to flatten out more quickly than their name brand counterparts.
Outside of a relative few flavors of soda, I have yet to find any “generic” drinks or food that tastes as good as the name brand stuff.
(Or at least not the generics that really are generic, and not just relabeled brand name stuff, like say Bi-Lo milk being Pet brand with a new label on it.)
give me back my name theme!!!!
Your name theme has been Homer’s The Oddysey all this time?
Heh, that’s what I said when I was little. I now find myself buying things that are even cheeper than what my parents bought me
Cheep cheep! Typo! Cheep!
After Mr. Sandwich probably says no they’ll break out the old sad eye’s and beg routine.
It’d work on me.
I don’t get it, they don’t want human food, so they’re trying to get their dad to buy pet food.
And are they trying say the dog food is better then the cat food? Because cats are Obligatory Carnivores meaning they have to eat meat. Since Ingredients on food goes by what it has most of down to what is has the least of, you should always get something with meat in the first position.
Can someone explain this one to me? Are they trying to both get animal food, and are they trying to get the food with a wolf instead of the one with the “science”?
Think about it in these terms. This is a world where pets walk and talk and are largely treated like we would children. What is a kid more likely to want, a box of cereal with famous sports heroes and such on the cover or a box uttering how “Good” it is for you?
And this applies to dog and cat food as well, but the reverse at least in real life is true, where a high selling point of food is how much they can proclaim it’s good for your animal, along with a appealing picture of the food being in the bowl.
Figure 1: Brand X vs Feral Mix (i.e. which dog food brand Mr. Sandwich should buy)
Figure 2: “Cat food: meat or sawdust?” (i.e. which cat food brand Mr. Sandwich should buy)
BTW: Dogs *love* cat food.
Grape (off-panel): “DAAAAAAD WHO ATE ALL MY FELINE SEAFOOD DELUXE”
Peanut: *earperks* “Gotta hide, gotta hide, gotta hide!”
But isn’t it supposed to be bad for their kidneys? Or is that when cats eat dogfood?
They don’t know that. They just know it’s so much richer than dogfood. We get dogs coming in through the cat door now and then and they go straight to the cat food.
If my cat was still alive, and he was an indoor/outdoor cat (thus the cat door, which we’ve never had) then he’d never let a dog near his food. Scratch first, question later!
three times the cost yes but…look at the bag! wolf! come on, thats GOTA be worth it?!?!
three times the cost, but approximately a hundred times more awesome <– definitely worth it!
Wow, reminds me of when I was young and my brothers and I did that, and I gotta tell ya vacuuming, cleaning the dishes, and giving the floor a good cleaning was much more convincing.
Peanut and Grape are on the right track though, it sounds much more healthier and more to their natural diets, so I’m already convinced.
Protip-They are trying to get the junk food.
Actually, they’re right.
A lot of the cheaper catfood and more well-known namebrands (the kind you usually see commercials for) usually list corn as the first ingredient, which is literally just filler, cats can’t really digest the stuff and its not really that healthy for them either, its used because its cheaper than meat and can artificially inflate the size of the food. They are carnivores after all, not omnivores, they might as well be pumping air into it.
The more expensive foods typically have meat as the first ingredient and don’t really contain much filler materials/grains/stuff cats can’t digest. Its not really cat-junkfood since its actually healthier.
fun (and by fun i mean disturbing) facts:
almost everything we eat contains corn
chicken nuggets are almost entirely corn
everything you eat (and i do mean EVERYTHING) contains insects
if somebody tells you to get off this silly website, tell them you’re learning about the strange customs of american food
if anybody asks you to cite where you got this information, tell them it was on a silly website
I didn’t know comments counted as websites!
Wait, so is that what the “website” field is for? For naming your comment site?
I’m afraid I must agree. Any moving organism needs more than just protein (the main thing we get from meat). We also need vitamins (gotten from vegetables) and carbohydrates (gotten from “wheat, flour, cornmeal”) to name a few.
In the wild, predators get this from eating prey that eats this, and occasionally eating veggies themselves. Processed meats (e.g. spam) usually eliminate the parts that provide this (e.g. stomach) under the excuse of making it tastier.
Okay, Thoth, shoot me down. I probably have something in there that is “not exactly” true.
generally, those things are true, but imply psuedodoxes (a psuedodox is a false opinion)
If a psuedodox is a false opinion (Opera reports as typo) then what is a psuedododox?
3 tries. Anybody?
They can always resort to the ’silent treatment’
And then! Towards the end of this presentation, out comes Steve Jobs: “Oh, and one more thing–”
If you’re going to raise a healthy dog or cat, you have to buy the good stuff and not crap. Yes it’s more expensive, but it’s still cheaper than people food. (you can make your own if you wish, it’s just less convenient).
Or you can train your dog to kill small animals, skin them, test them to make sure they don’t have something nasty and then feed your dog that way. Cats will feed themselves if you let them.
Ain’t that the truth. The vet my aunt goes to told her that one of her cats was getting too fat, and she needed to cut down on its food supply.
Her response was to inform the vet that that particular cat hunts entirely for itself and has done so for years, eating only what it killed on its own.
And our cat would probably do the same, if only there were enough squirrels around here to sustain him. (As it stands, he gets plenty of practice attacking our homemade corn muffins.)
All this talk about corn… oof. I’m feeling stuffed [with corn] already!
LOL, wow, that’s one of the funniest ones you’ve had lately. XD
It’s a whole story arc of one-offs!
I prefer to think of it as a series of disconnected episodes centered on the star duo
Hey, I like the early three-strip arcs! And so far the connection we have between the most recent two is: the star duo! Either talking about or eating food!
must. buy. FERAL MIX. for. my. pets!
Just ensure that the door is locked, the pet door is locked in case your pets don’t have thumbs, and make sure you wear protection from potential side effects, mostly the sudden appearance of a feral in your living room, etc. We recommend wearing pots and/or pans over your head and joints to restrict movement so that the feral doesn’t see you. Their eyesight is based solely on movement, you know.
Make ME kinda wanna eat some
Ahh, kids and their cereal.
Or in this case, Pets and their junk food.
in mah childhood, we had no fancy cereal for breakfast!
we ate LIVE ALLIGATORS!
It tastes just like chicken!… only chewier.
and by chewier he means chews more
If they get Feral mix, I bet they’ll be some of the most popular pets around
lol i bet so
Huzzah, everything is better with more SCIENCE!(tm).
Thoth said, “The dry cat and dog food are probably pretty good, given that the pets can tell the researchers (and their “parents”) which ones they like better and why.”
Now I’m debating with myself whether this strips supports his theory or shoots it down
The Joker warned me about Brand X. :O
ha! ive been trying to contact you for a few strips! in an earlier strip (the second one featuring tarot) you commented about something you “couldn’t unsee” and i politely demand (is that possible?) that you tell us what it was!
Oh God, the memories! I’ve don’t this very thing(minus the charts) more times than I care to admit.
“I have don’t this very thing”
Don’t you mean “I have DONE this very thing”?
What I like the most is seeing them double-team their dad. It’s like “help me buy the canine crunchies and I’ll help you with your feline seafood deluxe”.
You never fail to make me smile, Rick.
Isn’t “canine crunchies” the brand in 101 Dalmatians? (the 1961 animated film, not the 1996 live-action one)
Yes, it is.
Indeed this has happened to me when I was young as well D:D:D:
only to end up in failure lol
XDXDXD good to see moar peanut and grape!
My dogs would do the same to me if they could whenever I try to switch their food to the “better” food (of all things). So, They gets the not quite so expensive food, which is good for me. Cost wise not edibility.
There are times when I’m glad my dogs aren’t like the Housepets critters. I’d never hear the end of it.
I used to have a picky eater of a dog, Doberman Pincher.
My parents were feeding him one food and he’s eat it. Then my dad decided to start buying the cheaper stuff. Guess what: Prancer wouldn’t eat it. My dad got the bright idea (no sarcasm) to try and mix the two brands together. Prancer picked out EVERY SINGLE PIECE OF THE CHEAPER BRAND with his mouth, set it outside the bowl, and THEN ate!
XDXDXD He was a smart dog.
They make one good point,
a wolf head looks WAY cooler that a human sunday dinner.
and “Brand X” compared to “Feral mix”? No comparison!
A wolf’s head looks cooler than pretty much anything you could have on a bag of pet food.
a wolf’s head against a wolfish background?
OK, you could have a giant shark devouring a 747. Lasers optional. That would be cooler.
oh yeah, well, what you said plus one housepet!
(housepet being the new unit in which coolness is measured, aptly named after a certain comic)
that looks shopped
I bet my cat would do the same, if he was bipedal, had opposable thumbs and able to talk.
Though he has expressed his likes and dislikes on food choices pretty well without any of them. =P
Hmm…Feral mix makes a convincing argument.
hey, first three ingredients of the entire menu at BK too, the “byproduct” one lol.
Actually, it reminds me of the cereal in the bag and that is in the box… Kids love the box because it has that stupid bird, toucan, whatever thing on it while parents love the bag because its basically the same darn thing but cheaper AND healthier. :3
I SWEAR that i just had deja vu of having deja vu of having deja vu of having deja vu of having read that same comment!
Wouldn’t that qualify as a time paradox?
no, but having deja vu of losing your ability to have deja vu, because of that particular instance of deja vu would qualify
are you sure it wasn’t a random lqtm?
and that is the point when he calmly looks down at them and says…… “Where are your owners?!” *walks quickly away*
He is their owner.
I think that’s the point. Remember June 15th, 2009?
would it hurt you to put a link?
Yes, verily. My post would await moderation some 72 hours. I seem to somehow always trip those switches without meaning to.
Or is that when there’s two links? Wait, no, I just remembered. <a title=”strip’s title” href=LINK>Month, day, year</a> also got me flagged for moderation.
does anybody else find it odd the wolf has no pupils?
also ha! 100th comment!
It’se FERAL Mix! Not Puppy Eyes Mix!
It’s supposed to look fierce and awesome, food for the strongest of the pack! Or strongest of the backyard…
Strongest of the household
He (she?) probably does, but they are smaller than a pixel: the computer can’t show it. And if he/she doesn’t, it doesn’t matter! It’s a drawing on a bag in within a drawing! Some things have to be omitted (see the alt text on July 29th, 2009)
And following the same vein: 104th comment
again links are help with convenience
helpful, i mean
hey, my gravatar’s not changing! anybody got an idea why?
It changed for me, and now I don’t recognize you!
It takes a while for the gravvy to change. Longer still for some people, like I still see your old gravvy.
Hold shift down and hit refresh.
now i see it. What does Shift+refresh do?
refresh, ignoring any pre-cachéd data… except cookies
It’s true, having a wolf on the front does make it more awesome, but I think their math is off a bit. Having a wolf on the bag make it 138X better to be specific.
Oh, and by the way Frank, This is comic #263. Only 37 more before a Sparta joke, (hopefully done with pillows.
Anyone else wondering where the next comic is?
They don’t make feral mix for micros! *cries*
